This project examined the need for increased service learning in schools as well as current practices being used by educators who employ service learning as a regular part of curriculum. The review of literature found that service learning, when conducted properly, has shown benefits to students, educators, and communities. In addition, there were five main components of an effective service learning program: preparation, action, reflection, presentation, and recognition. Using Children's Literature And Parental Involvement To Facilitate Reading With Primary-Age Children Through A Literacy Backpack Program, Tami Marie Scrivner

The purpose of this project was to create a home literacy backpack program to increase children's reading skills with parental help through the use ofliterature that is relevant and meaningful to the students. Research that was reviewed showed students learn how to read through a balanced form of instruction using children's literature. Reviewed research also indicated parental involvement to be positively related to children's success in school. Materials necessary to put together 35 take home backpacks are included in this project. Conclusions, recommendations and suggestions for implementation of the backpack program are also discussed.

Implementing A Personalized Approach In The Remedial Reading Program, Shirley Burton Einarsson

A personalized reading program has been developed for a Title I remedial reading program in grades one through six. Providing an Instructional reading program that best meets the needs of each student was a major goal. The four instructional categories included were decoding skills, comprehension, vocabulary development, and dictionary and study skills. A system has been developed for recording performance in these areas, plus conferences and books read. The aim was to help each child reach his maximum learning potential.
