Contemporary Historical Research Conference, John A. Henschke Edd
IACE Hall of Fame Repository
The problems and rewards of conducting contemporary historical research are related in the light of the author's experiences in preparing an Ed.D. dissertation analyzing Malcolm, S. Knowles' contributions to and influence on the field of adult study accurate but inconclusive. The major portion of the dissertation was based on data available in documents by or about Knowles, but an "opinionnaire" schedule (an adaptation of the Applied Behavioral Science Interview schedule), loosely constructed and open-ended, was sent to 150 former colleagues and students of Knowles. The problems raised by this form of research are discussed by the author. Three areas of …

This paper presents a study of the Neurological Impress Method, with junior high students two or more years behind their expected Reading Comprehension level. Thirty students were randomly selected and placed into control and experimental groups by a random number process. These S's received eighteen weeks of special treatment with either the N.I.M. or oral reading practice for the controls. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the Reading Comprehension gains of controls and experimentals. The gains of both controls and experimentals was, however, found to be of significance. Conclusions and recommendations included suggestions for additional research and a discussion …

This organization of the flora of the campus provides a community service as well as an outdoor supplement to the classroom studies in plant science.
Teaching Music Concepts Through Games, Gennie Eldridge
Teaching Music Concepts Through Games, Gennie Eldridge
Honors Theses
The purpose of this Honors Project is to derive games and visual aids to help a child learn different musical concepts. From my own experiences of being a student and from teaching piano, it is my opinion that the more creative and versatile a teacher is, the more a child will learn. By using a little imagination and/or improvising on already well-known games, such as BINGO, any teacher can make his or her teachings more of a learning experience for the child. It is a well-known fact that children dislike practicing, but by presenting different concepts in a way that …

Rules And Freedom: Games As A Mechanism For Ego Development In Children And Adolescents, Layman E. Allen
Book Chapters
A NEW PHASE of Part I begins with this chapter by Layman Allen. The chief difference between the earlier and the later chapters lies in an emphasis first on play, then later on games. Allen summarized the proceedings of a "Rules and Freedom" conference that had been set up by Dr. Eli Bower with the intention of bringing together professional people having a wide variety of backgrounds. In many cases practitioners in one field did not know about the interest in and uses by practitioners in another. In a situation conducive to free exchange of orientations and objectives, the assembled …

The Effect Of Instructional Gaming Upon Absenteeism: The First Step, Layman E. Allen, Dana B. Martin
The Effect Of Instructional Gaming Upon Absenteeism: The First Step, Layman E. Allen, Dana B. Martin
Other Publications
In assessing'an experimental instructional gaming program in seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics at Pelham Middle School, Detroit, MI, absenteeism was taken as the most pervasive and pragmatic measure of student attitudes toward the learning environmentof the mathematics classroom. The experimental learning environment contained three major elements in addition to regular mathematics instruction: EQUATIONS, a problem-generating type of game; a twice-a-week tournament arranged to award reinforcements frequently and equally among the participants as well as to individualize the learning experience foreach student; and the organization of classes into teams designed to elicit cooperation. Experimental and control classes were taught by the same …
