Doctor of Education Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to better understand educators' perspectives of physical brain breaks at middle schools located in the northwestern part of North Carolina as it relates to the brain-based learning theory. This study is important because it helps to bridge the gap between the educational and neuroscience fields by providing teachers’ perspectives about using physical brain breaks, issues implementing them, and the importance of relationships with educational stakeholders. After submitting the survey, participants were asked to share their contact information to show their willingness to participate in a focus group with their peers to answer 10 questions …
Using Peer Supports To Improve Positive-To-Negative Teacher/Student Interaction Ratios By Novice Teachers, Karen Robbie
Using Peer Supports To Improve Positive-To-Negative Teacher/Student Interaction Ratios By Novice Teachers, Karen Robbie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A critical teacher shortage continues to exist throughout the United States. Challenges with student behavior and classroom management are identified as a top reason for teacher attrition. Educational research has demonstrated that PreK-12 students who receive social-emotional-behavioral support through evidence-based classroom management (EBCM) practices are more likely to achieve academic success. When teachers deliver high ratios of positive interactions to their students, positive student outcomes are likely to occur. However, researchers have consistently found that, like other EBCM practices, this low-intensity, high-impact practice is typically implemented at significantly lower levels than necessary to promote positive student outcomes. This implementation gap …
Teach Peacefully: Fostering A Positive And Engaging Classroom Environment, Kate E. Orbon
Teach Peacefully: Fostering A Positive And Engaging Classroom Environment, Kate E. Orbon
Community Engagement Student Work
This study explores the impact discipline strategies and classroom management techniques have on both students and teachers. Discipline strategies can positively and negatively affect student engagement, student behaviors, and student self-perception. They can also affect both negatively and positively teacher retention and job satisfaction. Evidence-based practices in peaceful, positive discipline create a learning environment that is engaging, respectful, and collaborative. Discipline strategies that promote connection, collaboration, empowerment, and respect foster the social, emotional, cognitive, and academic wellbeing of students.
Applied Behavior Analysis In The Secondary Art Classroom, Linda S. Stewart
Applied Behavior Analysis In The Secondary Art Classroom, Linda S. Stewart
Masters Theses
Special needs students in the secondary art classroom can be difficult to reach. Students with special needs are required by law to be provided with a fair and appropriate education. The challenge for art educators is to adequately meet the needs of all students in the classroom. This paper examines a brief history of education for students with special needs, behavior management in the classroom, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, the token system, and the value of a structured classroom environment. ABA therapy techniques in the secondary art classroom provide a tool in the classroom management aspect of providing structure …
The Problem-Solving Workshop: Adapting Process Improvement Methodologies For K-12 Educators, Madison Chan
The Problem-Solving Workshop: Adapting Process Improvement Methodologies For K-12 Educators, Madison Chan
Honors Theses
Lean and Six Sigma have been lauded in the manufacturing sector for their ability to streamline processes, reduce waste, minimize variation and defects, and improve the bottom line. Although these methodologies have begun to spread to other industries, their impact has been relegated to certain areas and has largely missed others. One area that bears strong consideration is education. Education is heavily process-based and notoriously tight on resources. It is hypothesized that if educators were taught the basics of these strategies and were able to implement them in the classroom setting, the effectiveness of both teaching strategies and classroom operations …
Proactive Classroom Management Strategies In U.S. Middle And Secondary Education, Brittany R. Graves
Proactive Classroom Management Strategies In U.S. Middle And Secondary Education, Brittany R. Graves
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of classroom management strategies has great importance for middle and secondary teachers. The present research aims to consolidate findings on evidence-based, proactive classroom management strategies for adolescents that can be effectively used by middle and high school teachers of all experience levels. Results suggest that relationship building, antecedent attention, positive verbal feedback, opportunities to respond, proactive discipline, and parental involvement increase engagement and decrease disruptive behavior in middle and secondary classrooms. Veteran, new, and preservice teachers should evaluate and update their classroom management strategies to reflect current, evidence-based practices.

It Pays To Behave: Investigating Effective Classroom Management, Rei Massie
It Pays To Behave: Investigating Effective Classroom Management, Rei Massie
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone project is on improving the work ethic and engagement of students by reducing challenging behavior that comes with classroom transitions and management. This is an important issue for educators because when an instructor spends too much time redirecting students, a lot of crucial learning time can be lost. Consideration of the issue included the perspectives of the training and program specialist and child program assistants of the observed after school child care center. Based on the findings, action was taken to help refine the educational opportunities and help decrease challenging behavior during instruction time to …

My Classroom Management Plan: The First Two Weeks Of School, Hannah Burkhart
My Classroom Management Plan: The First Two Weeks Of School, Hannah Burkhart
Honors Projects
As a pre-service teacher in one of the best teacher preparatory programs in the country, I learned many of the theories behind classroom management and discipline. After spending time during student teaching in my own classroom, however, I needed a more immediately useful solution than theory could provide. After investigating varied classroom management approaches and styles, I discovered the work of Harry and Rosemary Wong who inspired the creation of my own classroom management plan: a step-by-step guide of best practices and approaches to respond to daily issues and routines in the classroom. While I have heard that “the best …
Acting Out In The Classroom : Applying Principles And Methods Of Differentiation To Address Challenging Student Behavior, Jeffrey Neale Kulick
Acting Out In The Classroom : Applying Principles And Methods Of Differentiation To Address Challenging Student Behavior, Jeffrey Neale Kulick
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Schools emphasize the need to consider individual learner differences and provide individualized supports when designing and implementing academic instruction. One of the strategies used to accomplish these objectives is differentiation. Ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, cognitive, and even physical differences are all factored into the equation. Contrarily, these same differences are seldom considered when it comes to student behavior. Using empirical data, anecdotal evidence, and original case studies, the purpose of this paper is to establish more definitively the inherent problems in a punitive approach and investigate more thoroughly the idea of using principles and methods of differentiation as a possible alternative …
Do Teachers Modify Classroom Instruction And Management Plans Based On Student Gender, Mitchell Raymond Stubbs
Do Teachers Modify Classroom Instruction And Management Plans Based On Student Gender, Mitchell Raymond Stubbs
Dissertations
National education statistics and data indicators show that a significant portion of both male and female learners struggle through their educational experience with little to no success. The male learner is less successful in school than the female learner and drops out of high school more often. It is even more alarming when these numbers are examined within minority populations. In 2009, almost twice as many African American males and females and three times as many Hispanic males and females dropped out of high school than Caucasian males and females. Caucasian males and minority students of both genders overwhelmingly populate …
Creating Conversations, Changing Cultures: Case Study Of A Professional Development Plan, Alexis Goldberg
Creating Conversations, Changing Cultures: Case Study Of A Professional Development Plan, Alexis Goldberg
Graduate Student Independent Studies
There's a lot working against authentic demonstrations of thinking, and legitimate avenues of collaboration in our school cultures. We force-feed students high-stakes tests that promote a single "right answer" instead of multiple solution paths. Despite research that suggests teachers learn best from each other, we promote the ideal of the teacher-as-maverick. Many of our systems endorse closed-set, closed-door thinking that leaves room for neither independent student thinking nor the collaborative generation of ideas.
Breaking cultures this strong, this endemic, is a weighty task. In a yearlong case study, Alexis Goldberg creates and executes a professional development plan that engages with …

Creating A Schedule That Increases Instructional Time, Heather Macey
All Graduate Projects
This project was designed to help elementary schools create a master schedule that increases direct instructional time by forming large blocks of uninterrupted time for all classroom teachers. Many teachers struggle with how to structure their daily schedule. Often times there are things other than good quality instruction driving the decision of the structure of school schedules that create very choppy and ineffective schedules that do not support the best learning environment for the children. This project will combine several different approaches in scheduling taken by others that were researched and found to be effective in increasing instructional time and …
The Impact Of Zero Tolerance On Student Academic Achievement And Retention, Paul Robert Robinson
The Impact Of Zero Tolerance On Student Academic Achievement And Retention, Paul Robert Robinson
Theses Digitization Project
This study showed that emerging trends showing zero tolerance policies having negative effects on school children, especially those of poor and/or minority background, make an elementary district's recently implemented zero tolerance style for fifth and sixth graders an interesting area of study. It is well accepted that when established and enforced with fidelity and consistency students will acclimate to new rules. The extreme cases like the tragic incident at Columbine aside school administration has a fiducuary duty to provide a safe learning environment, and many studies show that learning either does not occur or occurs at a diminished rate in …
