It is quite obvious that the institutions that compete at the elite level of intercollegiate sports have failed miserably in their responsibilities to provide education about sports to the young men and women who participate in college athletics. If colleges and universities are sincere about their efforts to reform athletics, they must do better.

This document is a status report on the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy’s (IMSA) Research and Dissemination Network, which is funded as a contract with the Smithsonian Institution. In response to significant recent changes in project organization and activities, this report traces key developments of the project over its ten-year history. The report concludes with a summary of accomplishments during the current 2002-03 academic year.

Since ].K. Rowling's Harry Potter series was first published in 1997, parents, teachers, and readers of all ages have been fans of the boy wizard, enthusiastically standing in bookstore lines at midnight to purchase the next installment, or flocking to the movies, or rushing to buy the DVD. Previously reluctant readers, including young adult readers (MacRae), are suddenly enthralled with a book, and the adults who care for those readers are equally enthralled with its results. Magic, indeed.
