Repeated Readings To Promote Fluency For Students With Intellectual Disabilities, Christina Armada

Reading fluency is a skill that’s difficult for many students to acquire. However, research suggests that consistently implementing the Repeated Reading intervention can help students increase fluency and comprehension. The effect of this strategy when used to promote reading fluency in secondary students with severe intellectual disabilities has yet to be investigated. My research will examine the effect of the Repeated Reading intervention on the fluency level of students with intellectual disabilities in a public high school.

Inclusion Across the Lifespan Conference
Come hear how one 3rd grade team went out of their way to welcome and support the teachers and students from a new-to-the-school self-contained class for students with intellectual disabilities and/or autism in a project of grade-appropriate inclusion. The presenters will discuss the power of a positive attitude and combined ownership among staff members. Attendees will be given strategies to create a welcoming classroom community and tips on modifying activities and assessments.

This action research will investigate instructional games as a strategy to increase third grade students’ engagement and motivation. A researcher-created behavior checklist and survey will document students’ behavior and attitudes during baseline, intervention, and post intervention. Analysis will investigate changes in engagement, motivation, and grades due to the gaming intervention.

Reading is a challenging subject area for many students. When students are faced with learning disabilities or other special needs, this challenge becomes even greater. The role of Resource Specialist Program (RSP) teachers is to plan and intervene using explicit instruction for these students with special needs. The problem is two-fold, RSP teachers lack appropriate time to plan and provide explicit reading instruction to students. In a public school setting, multiage or combination classes are becoming increasingly prevalent. In most cases these classes are created out of necessity rather than a desire to engage students in multiage learning. Teachers are pulled from the general teaching pool and often do not have specialized training around the intricacies of multiage teaching.
A review of the literature indicates that the United States has a long history of multiage classrooms, with the first schools being all-inclusive and taught by one teacher. Over the years, the practice of graded schools took over, however the multiage school never went away (Anderson, …

Overall performance and well-being among student populations can be attributed to a decrease in stress and anxiety levels. Recent studies show a strong correlation between stress reduction using yoga movement, breathing and meditation. A calmer, focused and attentive classroom promotes an environment where both teacher and student experience less disruption. Limited research also supports a positive effect of yoga practice among students exhibiting symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Inattentiveness, impulsive and adverse behaviors can be successfully treated with yoga. Short interventions can offer students the coping skills needed to promote better self-esteem and confidence in learning and achievement …

Math instruction offers both challenges and rewards to students. The standards movement has brought positive outcomes to education. However, teachers are restricted by the specific and mandatory Common Core State Standards in mathematics. Teachers tend to focus on transmission of knowledge, rather than building deep knowledge using a constructivist approach to mathematics. Students’ creativity and problem-solving skills are not activated with common teaching practices. When students are engaged in mathematics they are recognizing patterns, making connections on their own, coming up with creative solutions, and discussing mathematical ideas with peers and adults. This research endorses storytelling as means to enhance student learning in the college classroom. Indeed, many of our earliest learning experiences may have involved storytelling—from Esoph’s Fables to Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Rare is the American adult who has not heard “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” or “The Ugly Duckling”. Both are childhood stories that provided reflective life messages. As such, storytelling is an enduring form of communication. Aviation college pilot training programs, lessons and exercises contain portions that do not require training in sophisticated and highly expensive full flight simulators and flight training devices (FTD) with high fidelity of simulation, or in real aircraft flights. Relatively inexpensive personal-computer-based flight simulation facilities named low fidelity simulators (LFS) can boost development of aircraft pilots’ cognitive and behavioral skills.
