Historically, the approach to teaching the special education child, who has learning difficulties, has been one of following the regular course of study but going more slowly than with the academically able student. However, junior high school special education students need to be motivated by techniques that go beyond existing methods. It was the purpose of this study: (1) to determine if the SQ3R technique could be used successfully with content and reading material at the seventh grade level; (2) to present a program to seventh grade students at Okanogan Junior High to determine the effect of the SQ3R method on improving comprehension as measured by the Diagnostic Reading Tests; and (3) to determine if the study methods learned could be transferred to a content area.
