It is the purpose of this study to determine whether a need for safety education exists in New Mexico. In order to determine this need two types of information have been secured: first, that pertaining to the kinds of safety measures that have been instituted in the state down to the present time; second, the numbers of accidents, deaths, and injuries. These last have been arranged into types of causes in order to show and to determine if possible what steps might be taken to reduce this number.

Vocational agriculture had its birth in Utah rural high schools in the spring of 1918. It is a program for training present and future farmers for proficiency in agriculture. The instruction in Utah, as in most states, has been devoted to the training of all-day (high school) students.

Since 1918 considerably over one million dollars of federal, state and local funds have been expended for all-day instruction in vocational agriculture in Utah. The Utah school bus which collided with a freight train in November 1938 and carried 23 of its passengers to their death was but one of over 86,000 such motor vehicles in operation in the United States during the school year of 1938-1939. In meeting the problem of securing qualified teachers in the past ten years New Mexico school administrators have shown a trend toward greater use of the institutional teacher placement bureaus. It is a purpose of this report to show to what extent the University is accepting the responbility of knowing the state's occupational needs, of selecting youth according to their abilities for fulfilling the varying needs, of aiding leaders in the field in making replacements and additions, of supplying adequate and proper preparation, of placing their graduates in positions, and of providing opportunities for their continued study and preparation.

This is the March 1, 1940 report of the student Picture Lending Library of Brown and RISD. The Lending Library began in the spring of 1933 through a Carnegie Corp. grant and was housed at the art galleries at Brown and RISD. Pictures were purchased from various dealers. The idea was to promote having artwork as a part of one's surroundings and not as a study aid.
