In order to best educate students, white teachers must engage in significant internal and interpersonal work in order to interrogate their own racial identity and develop a capacity for anti-racist pedagogy and practice. The need for white educators to do this work is challenged by the dominant system of white supremacy that dictates the structures of the American public school system; further, educators are limited by the racist rules and policies of the individual districts and institutions in which they work. This paper describes my journey through the CCT program and how it impacted me as an individual, as an officer in the Air Force, as well as those with whom I interact on a regular basis. I explore the concepts of creative problem-solving, dialogue processes, reflective practices, and research and engagement and how they enabled me to be a better leader. I am an educator making a career transition from classroom instruction to a community and family engagement role. In this synthesis I describe a pilot program that integrates what I’ve learned about schools, critical and creative thinking and what is known about successful community and family engagement. The goal of the program is to provide families access to educational opportunities in marginalized social groups and thus help educational resources become more equitable. I hope that the pilot program will help me secure a rewarding job.
