Sense Of Belonging And The Lived Experiences Of Students Of Color In A Racially Diverse Honors Program, Rebekah Joanna Chojnacki

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

This qualitative study fills a gap in the research the lived experiences of Students of Color in racially diverse honors programs by illuminating the experiences of 12 Students of Color enrolled in a racially diverse honors program. Enrollment in an honors program has been demonstrated to be beneficial to promoting a sense of belonging for college students. However, prior to this study, little research has been done on the experiences of Students of Color in an honors program that is racially diverse. Using sense of belonging for college students (Strayhorn, 2019) as a theoretical framework allowed for several themes to …

Pathway To Adopting Learning Analytics: Reconceptualizing The Decision-Making Process Of K-12 Leaders In North Texas, Justin T. Dellinger

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Learning analytics has emerged as a data-driven way to improve learner outcomes over the past decade. However, as the adoption and implementation of learning analytics continues to surge, there are some significant barriers to this process, such as stakeholder buy-in, training, and support, concerns over privacy and ethical issues, the quality of tools provided by third-party vendors, and institutional capacity to collect and meaningfully analyze and interpret data. Poor implementation can increase inequities, squander public funding, foster stakeholder resistance around future initiatives, and ultimately lead to abandonment. Another challenge stems from the need for educators to not only understand a …

Teacher Perceptions Of Looping In Relation To Their Professional Growth And Development, Staci Sellers Dec 2019

Teacher Perceptions Of Looping In Relation To Their Professional Growth And Development, Staci Sellers

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand better the lived experiences of seven elementary looping teachers. Specifically, their perceptions of whether or not the participation of looping facilitated their professional growth as it relates to the four primary areas of T-TESS. Previous studies in the realm of looping have a focus on student experiences and achievement. Although looping is research-based and shown to enhance student achievement, no known researcher had examined how looping teachers perceive the experience in terms of their professional being. This study was an opportunity to fill the gap in literature based on experiential learning …

Ethical Decision-Makers: How Student Affairs Staff Make Moral Choices In The Face Of Sexual Assault Cases On Campus, Veronica Daryl Davis

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

This qualitative study examined the experience of seven student affairs staff at a private, religiously oriented university in the South who deal with sexual assault cases. Using Nathaniel’s (2006) theory of moral reckoning (TMR) from the field of nursing in coding and analysis, several themes emerged including for staff seeing value in legal and policy training by the university, experiencing moral conflict, and being able to cope with it in order to continue in their profession. The implications of these themes have relevance to practice, theory, and future research. For practice, because the adjudication of these cases is personally challenging, …

Measuring Cultural Integrity Through The Lens Of Transculturation: An Examination Of Cultural Support For Native American College Students, Craig A. Marroquin Aug 2019

Measuring Cultural Integrity Through The Lens Of Transculturation: An Examination Of Cultural Support For Native American College Students, Craig A. Marroquin

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Native American college students have higher rates of attrition when compared to their non-Native counterparts. In previous studies, researchers have attributed the academic (un)success of Native students in a postsecondary setting to cultural conflict. In this dissertation, I used quantitative methods to examine culture-specific support mechanisms for a sample of 1,066 Native American college students through the lens of transculturation (i.e., social isolation, cultural reciprocity, and resiliency) and identified factors of support that led to the preservation of cultural integrity (i.e., maintenance of cultural traditions and preservation of cultural identity) and to academic success. More specifically, I examined the relationship …

Key To Success? Relationship Between Texas Success Initiative Assessments And Course Performance In First-Year, Credit-Bearing English And Math Classes, Ashley F. Carter

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) exams and student performance in associated content-area courses in postsecondary education. While the number of students attending college is projected to increase (Digest of Education Statistics, 2017; National Center for Education Statistics, 2018), many of them may not be prepared for a college education (Greene & Winters, 2005; Porter & Polikoff, 2012; Royster, Gross, & Hochbein, 2015) and are therefore obligated to enroll in developmental education classes (Bailey, Jeong, & Cho, 2010; Scott-Clayton, Costa, & Belfield, 2014). These courses are meant to provide …

The Impact Of Endrew F. V. Douglas County And Judicial Ideology On Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Fape Determinations In United States District Courts, Chrishawn Sontia Finister

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

The Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) is legislation intended to ensure that children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). Over the last 35 years, the FAPE standard by which special education services were evaluated was determined by the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruling in Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley (“Rowley”) in 1982. On March 22, 2017, the Rowley 1982 standard of FAPE was altered with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Endrew F. vs. Douglas County School District (commonly referred to as Endrew F.). The law allows …

Black Students’ Perceptions Of Campus Climate At A Racially Mixed Institution, Melissa Ann Brown May 2019

Black Students’ Perceptions Of Campus Climate At A Racially Mixed Institution, Melissa Ann Brown

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Black students are not persisting to degree completion at the same rate as White students. While research about Black students’ experiences at predominately White institutions (PWI) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) is ample, more research is needed on racially mixed institutions (RMIs), where white students make up less than 40% of the student population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of campus climate of eight Black students attending one RMI in the Southwestern United States. Using the Modified Mutual Acculturation theory as a lens, this qualitative phenomenological study revealed the experiences of these …

Community College Stigmatization: Perceptions Of Vertical Transfer Students At The University Level, Melissa Laird

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

This qualitative study fills a void in research by investigating the experiences of 10 vertical transfer students regarding perceptions of community college stigmatization. Prior studies have explored reasons for transfer student university attrition, and negative stereotyping has been found to have an adverse effect on various populations. However, no known research has been conducted on how transfer students perceive others view them in light of their community college attendance. Therefore, the purpose of this case study was to examine whether vertical transfer students believed there was a stigma connected to community college attendance, and, if so, how they described that …

Dual Credit As A Key To Preparation: Exploring Dual Credit As A College Readiness Strategy, Rachel Elizabeth Jones May 2019

Dual Credit As A Key To Preparation: Exploring Dual Credit As A College Readiness Strategy, Rachel Elizabeth Jones

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Dual credit is a rapidly-expanding coursework option for high school students that provides a means to early college credit and is also touted as a strategy to increase postsecondary readiness. However, existing studies that tie dual credit to college preparation rely upon indicators such as enrollment, achievement, and completion of degrees; they stop short of a full evaluation of readiness by not including the variety of competencies that are necessary for college success. This dissertation presents three studies that seek to explore links between dual credit participation and an established framework for college readiness. The first is a quantitative analysis …

Predicting Nclex-Rn® Failure In A Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Meagan Riley Rogers May 2019

Predicting Nclex-Rn® Failure In A Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Program, Meagan Riley Rogers

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations

Graduates of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing programs must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, or NCLEX-RN®. First-time pass rates are the primary quality indicator for nursing programs. National pass rates are approximately 90% and schools falling below 85% face funding and accreditation risks. Schools of nursing have adopted stringent admission and progression policies based on predictors of licensure success. However, there is a gap in the current body of evidence associated with predictors of NCLEX-RN® failure. Nursing programs using predictors of success for admission and progression decisions are shutting the door of opportunity on students who could be …
