Pisa Mathematics - An Insider's View, Ross Turner

Ross Turner

In this paper the author describes what it is that the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) mathematics assessment aims to measure, and presents a case regarding the potential benefits that could flow from a pedagogy that takes the PISA mathematics challenges seriously. Other potential uses of PISA data are also briefly canvassed.

Dr Alla Routitsky

People from many countries have expressed interest in the tests students take for the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). This book examines the link between the PISA test requirements and student performance. It focuses specifically on the proportions of students who answer questions correctly across a range of difficulty. The questions are classified by content, competencies, context and format, and the connections between these and student performance are then analysed. This analysis has been carried out in an effort to link PISA results to curricular programs and structures in participating countries and economies. Results from the student assessment reflect …

A New Role For Item Aficionados In High-Stakes Testing Programs, Gabrielle Matters Dec 2008

A New Role For Item Aficionados In High-Stakes Testing Programs, Gabrielle Matters

Dr Gabrielle Matters

The purpose of this paper is to point teachers, test analysts, and users of test results to the significance of student responses at the item level and considering what it is that each item purports to measure and actually measures before taking the evidence of a low score on a test − just a score derived from a collection of items − and coming to the seemingly obvious but not necessarily accurate conclusion that the student has no knowledge or understanding of the domain being tested. An item aficionado does not approach test items and test results at the level …

Investigating Gender Differential Item Functioning Across Countries And Test Languages For Pisa Science Items, Luc Le Dec 2008

Investigating Gender Differential Item Functioning Across Countries And Test Languages For Pisa Science Items, Luc Le

Dr Luc Tu Le

This study uses PISA cycle 3 field trial data to investigate the relationships between gender differential item functioning (DIF) across countries and test languages for science items and their formats and the four other dimensions defined in PISA framework: focus, context, competency, and scientific knowledge. The data used were collected from 60 test language groups by 50 participating countries with a total of about 83,000 15-year-old students. An IRT method is used to detect the gender uniform DIF for each of the language groups and the whole international sample. Gender directions have been drawn for each of the five item …
