Self-Study: A Method For Continuous Professional Learning And A Methodology For Knowledge Transfer, Judy C. Woods

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Purpose: Clinical nursing instructors must participate in continuous professional learning to maintain competency in nursing practice and in clinical instruction to prepare nursing students adequately for professional practice. The purpose of this research was to examine self-study as a method of continuous professional learning in nursing education.

Procedures: A clinical instructor undertook to improve her clinical instruction with regard to five formative assessment strategies illustrated to promote student learning in regular classrooms. She translated and then implemented these strategies in nursing education. This self-study of instructional practice employed a reflective journal and systematic documentation of iterative processes of planning, action, …

Formative Assessment And Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Albert Humes Jul 2021

Formative Assessment And Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Albert Humes

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review investigates the use of formative assessment and technology in the classroom. There has been research to show that mathematics proficiency has dropped recently in the United States and researchers are looking to identify new strategies for student growth. Utilizing formative assessments, as well as targeted, immediate feedback for students, can help to improve student learning. As educational technology becomes more prevalent, more studies and research are focused around its effectiveness toward student achievement. The research found that formative assessment strategies, coupled with new technologies, can positively impact student achievement.

Feedback As A Connector In Remote Learning Environments, Heather Rottermond, Laura Gabrion Mar 2021

Feedback As A Connector In Remote Learning Environments, Heather Rottermond, Laura Gabrion

Michigan Reading Journal

In March, Michigan educators unexpectedly found themselves rethinking instruction. As schools throughout the state were shuttered due to the COVID-19 health crisis, educators at every level needed to consider ways to sustain relationships with students in an effort to move learning forward. Feedback has always served as a natural connector between teachers and their students, but students’ use of feedback is based upon trust. This article examines the importance of formative assessment and the feedback cycle while exploring ways to deliver feedback in remote settings. By prioritizing the student-teacher relationship, teachers foster students’ active engagement with feedback, thereby raising students’ …

How Teachers Use Formative Assessment Strategies During Teaching: Evidence From The Classroom, Hem Chand Dayal Jan 2021

How Teachers Use Formative Assessment Strategies During Teaching: Evidence From The Classroom, Hem Chand Dayal

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Using lesson observations, the study reported in this article explores how two practising secondary mathematics teachers implemented formative assessment actions in their classroom teaching. The study also investigated whether teachers’ beliefs about teaching and assessment could be mapped onto their classroom practices. In particular, while the two teachers were implementing student portfolio assessment in their own Year 9 mathematics lessons, the classroom observations focused on how they utilised formative assessment actions such as clarifying and sharing learning criteria intentions and criteria for success; activating students as instructional resources; and, providing feedback that moves learners forward. The findings suggest that one …

Formative Assessment And Academic Performance As Predictors Of National Physical Therapy Examination Success, Tobi Fox Baldwin Jan 2021

Formative Assessment And Academic Performance As Predictors Of National Physical Therapy Examination Success, Tobi Fox Baldwin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physical therapy educational researchers have studied various factors that may or may not predict success on the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). One factor that has not been studied extensively is the use of the Academic Practice Examination and Assessment Tool (APEAT) as a formative assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of the APEAT as a formative assessment along with Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program grade point average (GPA) on success on the NPTE. Carless’s learning-oriented assessment theory was used as the theoretical foundation for this study and to guide the analysis of …

Exploring How Formative Assessment Rubric Is Used In Schools To Support Teaching And Learning: A Case Study Of One Primary School In Kenya., Jacqueline Bahati Atak Jan 2021

Exploring How Formative Assessment Rubric Is Used In Schools To Support Teaching And Learning: A Case Study Of One Primary School In Kenya., Jacqueline Bahati Atak

Theses & Dissertations

Kenya implemented a new curriculum, CBC, due to the flaws experienced by the 8-4-4 system. The realization was made possible by borrowing ideas from countries with success anecdotes in CBC across the globe. A key component of the curriculum design book, the formative assessment rubrics, is a new concept especially in rural public primary schools, Kenya that have limited resources, infrastructure, and teachers. With just over five years of operation, opportunities and challenges are expected in its adoption. However, there is scant literature about the use of rubrics in primary schools in Kenya and therefore, this study sought to explore …

Towards The Development Of A Framework For The Inclusion Of Peer Assessment In Irish Medical Science Undergraduate Education, Mary Mcgrath Jan 2021

Towards The Development Of A Framework For The Inclusion Of Peer Assessment In Irish Medical Science Undergraduate Education, Mary Mcgrath

Doctoral

Assessment of learning is integral to all programmes in Higher Education (HE). While one purpose of assessment is to confirm achievement of standards, another is to support student learning. When educational programmes adopt an assessment strategy that is inclusive of ‘assessment for learning’ the role of assessment supporting learning can be expanded and sustained more effectively. Peer Assessment (PA) is an example of an assessment approach that can support and enrich student learning. The advantages and benefits of PA are strongly established in the published literature.

This research study aimed to investigate and develop a framework for the inclusion of …
