Florida Statewide Symposium: Best Practices in Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this presentation is to highlight avenues toward undergraduate scholarship in education and business. The common theme of these initiatives is the transformative learning which students experienced in local and global communities. In education, the examples include a course-embedded action research with community service, and autoethnography in which students analyzed their experiences abroad to uncover the process of transformation. In business, students worked on a semester long project in quality management collaborating with a local health equipment manufacturer. The systematic guidance of the business and continuous feedback of the instruction, resulted in full transformation of student learning.

One of the challenges of online education is the lack of real-time feedback. JotForm is a web-based form builder used to track and evaluate student progress through an entire class rather than at the end of it. Forms can be embedded into existing learning materials and learning management systems. I will demonstrate some JotForm features suitable for online education and assessment and share how the UMKC School of Law is using JotForm to assess, engage, and communicate with students. Ernest Boyer's research in the early 1990's has had a large impact since on how many schools of higher education define and conduct scholarship. Some research universities have broadened their requirements beyond publish or perish and universities who emphasize teaching over publishing have reported activities to broaden theirsl. This research project surveys the scholarship policies and attitudes of schools within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), contrasting the views of library directors and academic deans. Supported by a grant from CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois).

The purpose of our study was to reflect on how community-based cultural arts programs have had an impact on academic achievement, academic performance, and self-esteem among youth, aged 13 to 24 years old. Community-based creative arts offer a medium through which youth direct their energy toward achieving positive social, emotional, and academic outcomes (Wright, John, Alaggia, & Sheel, 2006). Goals and Objectives: Our institution, Georgia Southern University, has selected a Quality Enhanced Plan (QEP) focusing on fostering effective student writing and associated thinking skills across all college and in the disciplines. In addition to the 1st Student Learning Outcome (SLO) of demonstrating argumentation, analysis, and synthesis skills through writing, the 2nd SLO in our QEP highlights students’ engagement in process writing. The Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) is exploring options for determining effectiveness of career and technical eduction programs. The purpose of this study was to deteremine the metrics Tennessee agricultural education teachers perceived as indicators of excellent total programs – classroom instruction, FFA (student organization), and Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). A Delphi was used to obtain a general consensus by a panel of 21 agriculture teacher experts. A 66.7% agreement rate was determined a priori to represent a general consensus. The panel identified one classroom, five FFA, and three SAE metrics to indicate total program excellence. Student pesticide certification was …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess Physician Assistant (PA) students’ attitudes and experiences toward academic dishonesty during training and to determine whether PA students self-report cheating during PA school.

Methods: An anonymous, quantitative, exploratory, descriptive survey was sent to clinical-year PA students enrolled in PA programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

Results: A sample of 493 self-selected PA students in their clinical year of training responded to the survey. Only 3% of clinical-year PA students self-reported cheating during PA school. Males self-reported significantly higher rates of …
