Dr Daniel Edwards
Each year, graduates of Australian higher education institutions who have completed a doctoral or research masters degree are invited by their institution and Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) to respond to the Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ) about four months after graduation. This report presents the results from the ninth PREQ survey conducted since 1999. The PREQ asks graduates to respond to 28 statements about seven aspects of their research degree. The first 27 statements measure the quality of supervision, the intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent studied, the development of generic skills, the quality of the infrastructure …

An Assessment Of Influences, Positive And Negative On Educational Assessment Today, Gabrielle Matters
An Assessment Of Influences, Positive And Negative On Educational Assessment Today, Gabrielle Matters
Dr Gabrielle Matters
Influenced by an approach used in Time magazine, Dr Matters will list the most and least influential ideas in educational assessment. She will also assert that there is little or no evidence that current assessments are assisting students to learn the "big ideas" or things that are intrinsically difficult. This state of affairs can be attributed, at least partially, to the luxury of living in a democracy, the feminisation of education, and the short length of the political cycle.

Initial Findings From The Iea International Civic And Citizenship Education Study., Wolfram Schulz
Dr Wolfram Schulz
The International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) studied the ways in which countries prepare their young people to undertake their roles as citizens. It investigated student knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as student attitudes, perceptions, and activities related to civics and citizenship. It also examined differences among countries in relation to these outcomes of civic and citizenship education, and it explored how differences among countries relate to student characteristics, school and community contexts, and national characteristics.
ICCS considered six research questions concerned with the following: 1. Variations in civic knowledge; 2. Changes in content knowledge …

The Selection Of Cases For Culturally Comparative Psychological Research., Petra Lietz
The Selection Of Cases For Culturally Comparative Psychological Research., Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
Sampling is at the core of data collection, and a plethora of techniques and procedures have been described in the literature. Opinion polls and social science surveying are at the forefront of research and practical applications in this context. Despite a multitude of handbook articles and much rarer textbook chapters the lege artis sampling of participants of psychological research remains a neglected topic. Amongst psychologists, common sense convictions about the importance of the sampling topic range from implicitly declaring the question irrelevant for the discipline to accepting as sound science only studies that employ a rigid probability sampling approach.

From The Ground Up, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
From The Ground Up, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz
What happens when educators rather than policymakers initiate a program to define and maintain professional teaching standards from the ground up? It is possible to trace the current Draft National Professional Standards for Teachers back to 2003, when Australia's Ministers for Education endorsed the National Framework for Professional Standards for Teaching. They can be traced even further back, though, to the Control of Entry campaign of the 1960s and '70s. In 1969 fewer than 40 per cent of secondary teachers in Victorian government schools held a university degree and the figure for teachers with both a degree and teacher training …
