This study was guided by Astin’s Student Involvement theory which explored student’s needs in a demanding program amongst 12 pre-pharmacy students at the University of the Pacific. This qualitative study looked to uncover the engagement, experiences, and support of pre-pharmacy students in order to learn what students want from their learning experiences; to aid in student success and retention. Qualitative interviews provided detailed stories to their pre-pharmacy experiences. The current building level emergency procedmes manual for Ilalko Elementary School in the Auburn School District in the State of Washington was reviewed and critiqued. The manual contains the school's emergency preparedness policies and procedmes to be implemented in the event of a disaster. The results of the review showed a need for updating policies and practices at the building level as well as creating additional resources to guide the school should other disasters occur which were not addressed in the current manual. A handbook was also created to increase teacher response effectiveness in the event of an emergency situation.

A look at the development of participatory decision making, in one high school, was described in this study from a historical perspective. Kent-Meridian High School, in the Kent School District, was the studied school. Between the years 1979 and 1992 KentMeridian had three principals with very different and distinct styles. During this time span the emergence of a shared decision model, called "Empowerment", developed as a result of faculty expectation and pressure. Conclusions, implications, and recommendations are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze roles, responsibilities, and professional preparation of high school department chairs by surveying persons who presently fulfill department chair responsibilities at the high school level in Grant County, Washington. A sample of 31 high school department chairs was surveyed using a survey instrument covering the roles, responsibilities, and preparation of high school department chairs. The purpose of this study was to assess the uses and effectiveness of computers in educational administration. Principals from the high schools of Washington State's Mid-Valley AA League responded to a questionnaire regarding the uses of computers in their buildings and the perceived effectiveness of computers used for administrative tasks. Survey results indicated that the majority of high schools in the Mid-Valley AA League have used computers for common administrative tasks, and principals found that these tasks were accomplished more effectively with a computer.

The presence of the microcomputer in society and education is on the increase. This study compared the expertise and use of computers by elementary principals, to the availability and attitudes of its implementation by the teaching staff. A questionnaire elicited data from principals and revealed that they indirectly influenced the increase of computer use by teachers by providing inservice opportunities, workshops, and courses, and directly influenced them by providing personal encouragement. Several recommendations were made concerning administrative use of computers.

An original design of an incentive plan to reward and encourage instructional proficiency was developed. The evaluative criteria is based on findings of current research in effective instruction. Students, colleagues, administrators, and a trained outside observer appraise behaviors in the domains of classroom climate, time on task, management of student conduct, and teacher expectations. A proficiency grid rates and maps the collected data. Proficiency point totals determine monetary reward and identify professional development needs.

The costs and public effects of using federal vocational education dollars in the local school district were studied. Twenty-five Washington school districts were randomly selected. Financial data were compiled and a survey distributed to these schools. The results showed increased use of federal vocational monies resulted in increased local administration, as school size decreased use of federal monies decreased, smaller schools spend more money per student, and local advisory committees feel that vocational education needs federal monies.

Relationship Between Systematic Planning At Community Colleges And Goal Agreement, Nancy Emily Stetson

The relationship between systematic planning at community colleges and goal agreement among administrators was studied. Sixty-nine administrators at four community colleges were surveyed. The results showed that administrators at the two community colleges who perceived their institutions to be relatively more systematic in planning also perceived relatively smaller gaps between what were, and what should be the goals of their institutions. By this measure, community college administrators demonstrated a consistent and positive relationship between systematic planning and goal agreement.
