This is a guide to using Quest. Quest offers a comprehensive test and questionnaire analysis environment by providing a data analyst with access to the most recent developments in Rasch measurement theory, as well as a range of traditional analysis procedures. It includes an easy to use control language with flexible and informative output. Quest can be used to construct and validate variables based on both dichotomous and polychotomous observations. It scores and analyses such instruments as multiple choice tests, Likert type rating scales, short answer items, and partial credit items.

This paper reviews the evidence on the existence of scale economies in Australian secondary schools. The paper has three main sections: a description of the sizes of Australian secondary schools; an outline of the conceptual basis for estimations of scale economies; and a review of the empirical studies that have been conducted in Australia and overseas.

A category where the frequency of responses is zero, either for sampling or structural reasons, will be called anull category. One approach for ordered polytomous item response models is to downcode the categories (i.e., reduce the score of each category above the null category by one), thus altering the relationship between the substantive framework and the scoring scheme for items with null categories. It is discussed why this is often not a good idea, and a method for avoiding the problem is described for the partial credit model while maintaining the integrity of the original response framework. A single science textbook often provides the syllabus for courses at upper secondary and tertiary levels, and may be used as a principal source of information or explanation. The research reported in this article challenges such practices. The ways in which the concept, acceleration, is treated in physics textbooks is compared with understandings of the concept demonstrated by final-year secondary (Year 12) and first-year university students. Some students' understandings are shown to be incomplete in ways that parallel misleading or inaccurate textbook treatments of the concept. This report presents a summary of the data collected by the project, and an analysis, using a view of competence through a relational model, of some of the issues that emerged. The authors suggest that universities, the professions, employers and the community have much to gain from the activities of the past few years concerned with the development of competency-based standards by the professions, although they do not believe that a full-blown competency-based approach to education will become dominant in university courses.

Traditionally, until the 1970s, senior secondary schooling in Australia was restricted to a minority of each age group. This was particularly pronounced in the case of government schools. From that time, however, the proportion of each cohort staying at school beyond the compulsory years began to increase rapidly and, by the 1980s, retention patterns in secondary schools had changed dramatically. These changes were most marked in government secondary schools. Recent research in cognitive psychology has drawn attention to the important role that students' personal understandings and representations of subject matter play in the learning process. This chapter briefly reviews some of this research, and contrasts the kind of learning that results in an individual's changed conception or view of a phenomenon with the more passive, additive kind of learning assessed by most traditional achievement tests. It is important that students of physics develop both quantitative and qualitative understanding of physical concepts and principles. Although accuracy and reliability in solving quantitative problems is necessary, a qualitative understanding is required in applying concepts and principles to new problems and in real-life situations. If students are not able to understand what underlies quantitative problem-solving procedures nor interpret the solution in physical terms, it is questionable whether they have developed an adequate understanding of physics. In previous research, participation in science studies in senior secondary school has been related to both background characteristics of students and to earlier achievements and interests. This paper reports an investigation of participation in combinations of subjects in senior secondary schools in Australia which embody different science orientations. It shows that different combinations of factors shape participation in physical science' and 'biological and other science' types of course. Both are favoured by investigative interest but participation in a physical science course type is strongly associated with high levels of earlier school achievement in numeracy and gender whereas participation in a …

This thesis investigates the experiences of eighteen young people who completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in 1991 without intending to proceed to university. It examines their reasons for staying at school to complete VCE and their perceptions of the VCE year and its usefulness to them. This study was prompted by current changes in perceptions of the purpose of post compulsory education shown by government drives for high retention rates in Year 12 and moves for vocationally oriented competency based curricula. This study compares lexical development in a sample of 25 simultaneous bilingual and 35 monolingual children for whom semilongitudinal data were collected between the ages of 8 and 30 months. A standardized parent report form, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (1989), was used to assess the children's receptive and productive vocabulary in English and/or Spanish. A methodology was devised to assess the degree of overlap between the bilingual children's lexical knowledge in one language and their knowledge in the other.
