Develop A Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sids) Education Package In Jordan: Using Participatory Action Research Approach To Create Ripple Of Change, Shereen Hamadneh, Jehan Hamadneh
eCULTURE
IInfant mortality is high in Jordan, a developing country in the Middle East, at 19 per 1000 live births. Most mortality risk factors are preventable. The SIDS incidence rate has also been extrapolated as 11.22 per 1000 live births [1]. This is much higher than the United State of America (USA), a developed country (0.54 per 1000 live births) [2]. Most of modifiable SIDS risk factors can be reduced by increasing knowledge, change behaviors and practices regarding SIDS risks and prevention measures.
There has not been a major investment in educating Jordanians about SIDS. Heath care providers are identified …

Online Instruction Made Easy: Getting Started With The Guide On The Side, Erica Defrain
UVM Libraries Conference Day
Come learn about a great new tool for easily creating effective and engaging online tutorials built around the theory of active learning. The Guide on the Side was created by librarians at the University of Arizona and released as an open source download in 2012. We hope to soon have it installed for all to use at the UVM Libraries!

Usability Testing To Enhance User Experience: The Catquest Usability Study, Aaron Nichols, Amber Billey, Alice Stokes, Peter Spitzform, Catherine Mundy
UVM Libraries Conference Day
After implementing the discovery tool Primo (eventually renamed CATQuest), the UVM Libraries conducted a usability test to understand how our users approach using this tool without instruction, to discover patterns in searching behavior, and to uncover how compatible Primo is with user search behavior. This presentation will demonstrate the design and implementation of the usability study, as well as reveal some surprising results.

"Save The Males!", Anton Reece
Black Issues Conference
The majority of male students enter the University of Tennessee with similar ACT scores and high school grade point averages. However, they are being retained at significantly lower rates when compared to their female counterparts. The discrepancy is even more pronounced among African-American males. As a result a male student committee was established in spring 2012 identify barriers and make recommendations to the Undergraduate Student Task Force for Student Success. This informative and interactive session looks at the retention and academic performance data we reviewed and we want to solicit feedback from the audience to discuss suggestions to retain our …

Bringing Online Peer Review Into Blended Teaching, Susan White
Bringing Online Peer Review Into Blended Teaching, Susan White
Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
Motivated by my experience as a student in a MOOC, I have incorporated online peer review of writing assignments into my advanced undergraduate biochemistry courses. Each student submits her review of a course reading or report online, then evaluates work submitted by two or three of her classmates based on a rubric I provide. As peer reviewers, students anonymously assign low-stakes grades and receive credit for their reviews, but they also get an opportunity to write for each other and read their classmate's responses to course topics. Moodle’s Workshop activity was used to manage the submission and review process. I …

Fostering Student Engagement In An Upper-Level, Online Seminar On The History Of Sexuality: Lessons Learned About Pedagogy And Course Design To Deepen Students’ Learning, Kristine Rabberman
Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
GSWS 422 “History of Sexuality” has been offered for four years in the online summer program at the University of Pennsylvania. The instructor leads advanced undergraduate and graduate students through a highly interactive seminar class in which they learn how to analyze critically works in the history of sexuality, exploring sexual identities, roles and norms from Ancient Greece and Rome, to the United States in the 21st century. Students are required to demonstrate their critical engagement and understanding of central debates and themes, methodological challenges, and issues of change versus continuity. One of the instructor’s goals in teaching the …

Using Blended Learning To Take Advantage Of Learning Science Research, Jennifer Spohrer
Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
Why does blended learning work? Some observers have suggested that students simply spend more time with the material in a blended course, but evidence from studies of blended courses is mixed. Learning science research suggests that how learners study also matters, and a blended learning approaches incorporate many tactics shown to be effective, such as formative assessment, repetition at intervals, and metacognitive prompting.

Interdisciplinary Research Scholarship Day
Competing demands of work, family, friends, and the academic rigor while in an accelerated baccalaureate nursing program often lead to high levels of anxiety and may contribute to unsuccessful student progression. This phenomena is not unique to the UNLV School of Nursing but is an issue that nursing programs grapple with nationwide. While there is nursing research literature related to student success programs there are limited studies that describe the use of a Student Success Facilitator (SSF) coupled with a Student to Student Mentoring Program (SSMP). The University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public state university with a fully accredited School of Nursing (SON), which typically admits 48 students every trimester into their accelerated pre-licensure BSN program. UNLV is:
- Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
- Fully Approved by the Nevada State Board of Nursing (NSBN),
- Continuously working to meet and uphold external standards and to remain current and competitive.
A team consisting of two Level 4 BSN students and the BSN Coordinator identified the need to better integrate the QSEN competencies into current nursing curriculum. Although the competencies are embedded into …

The Impact Of Small Group Instruction On The Reading Ability Of Three First Grade Students, Jillian Wilson
The Impact Of Small Group Instruction On The Reading Ability Of Three First Grade Students, Jillian Wilson
Undergraduate Research Conference
This literacy project investigated the impact of small group reading instruction on the reading ability of first graders. During fall 2012, the teacher candidate conducted research in a first grade classroom in a rural East Texas elementary school three days a week for an eight-week period. One purpose of this literacy project was to enable teacher candidates to gain experience conducting reading assessments, planning age appropriate reading lessons, and implementing those lessons in a small group instructional setting. Another purpose was to administer pre and post assessments to monitor the reading development of a group of students.
