This paper focuses upon occupation-based conceptualisations of socioeconomic status (SES). Using occupational data to measure the SES of individuals is a two-step process, whereby it is necessary to first collect and code occupational data, usually in accordance with an official occupational classification, and second, to recode these data into a measure of SES. There are three broad types of measures available – class, occupational prestige, and socioeconomic indices – and within these broad types, a large array of conceptualisation and measures are available. This article provides an overview of the development of a new occupational status scale, the Australian Socioeconomic Index 2006 (AUSE106). This is the latest in the series of ANU scales, which since 1965, have provided a means for researchers to convert data coded in accordance with official occupational classifications into occupational status scores. The ANU scales have been widely used in fields such as sociology, education, economics and health. The new scale has been developed in response to the introduction of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The underrepresentation of persons from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education in countries such as Australia is of policy concern. In order to be able to identify such individuals for targeted interventions and to monitor their participation rates, it is necessary to have an accurate, simple to administer, and relatively inexpensive method of measuring students' socio-economic characteristics. We demonstrate that the postcode methodology currently used by the Australian Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) for monitoring purposes, while being relatively simple and inexpensive to administer, is subject to considerable error.
