Leadership In Indigenous Education, Nola Purdie, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

This brief scoping paper was developed around the theme of ‘What’s happening in Indigenous leadership in education in Australian schools?’ A dual focus for this theme was noted: leadership for Indigenous education; and leadership by Indigenous principals and teachers. The authors provide an overview of current issues in educational leadership that were derived, in the main, from papers presented at the 2007 ACER conference on educational leadership. Current offerings and opportunities in the area of Indigenous leadership and leadership for Indigenous education include those operating through the Australian Principals Associations Professional Development Council (APAPDC), principally through the Dare to Lead …

Evaluation Of The Sporting Chance Program, Michele Lonsdale, Jenny Wilkinson, Stephanie Armstrong, David Mcclay, Sharon Clerke, Jocelyn Cook, Kanat Wano, Robert Simons, Gina Milgate, Meredith Bramich

Jenny Wilkinson

The objective of the Sporting Chance Program is to encourage improved educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (boys and girls) using sport and recreation. Such outcomes may include an increase in school attendance, strengthened engagement with school and improved attitudes to schooling, improved achievement in learning, increased retention to Year 12 or its vocational equivalent and greater parental and community involvement with the school and students’ schooling. The program comprises two elements: • School-based Sports Academies (Academies) for secondary school students; and • Education Engagement Strategies (EES) for both primary and secondary school students. The purpose of …

Studies Of Asia In Year 12, Jenny Wilkinson, Gina Milgate Feb 2010

Studies Of Asia In Year 12, Jenny Wilkinson, Gina Milgate

Jenny Wilkinson

Across Australia, very few Year 12 subjects focus on Asia, according to this report. Where content on Asia is offered, it often has an Australian or Western focus. The authors found that, in practice, it is schools and teachers who select the material that students will study. Teachers are not likely to select material with which they themselves are unfamiliar or may have never studied. They will tend to choose what they know about and are confident of teaching, particularly at Year 12 level, where so much rides on students’ results. What teachers know and teach about will reflect to …

The Vit Program For Supporting Provisionally Registered Teachers : Evaluation Of Implementation In 2005., Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Siek Toon Khoo, Jenny Wilkinson Feb 2010

The Vit Program For Supporting Provisionally Registered Teachers : Evaluation Of Implementation In 2005., Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Siek Toon Khoo, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

The VIT’s Program for Supporting Provisionally Registered Teachers and its registration procedures are increasingly seen as valid and fair. The Program is generally perceived as leading to improvements in teaching practice. Principals and mentors were very positive about the program, and consistently reported high levels of satisfaction with its implementation. Research has repeatedly found that significant reforms are often accompanied by a degree of unease and resistance, and this has been the case with the introduction of the VIT standards and registration requirements. School leaders play a vital role in leading their schools through these changes. This study has found …

The Victorian Institute Of Teaching : Standards And Professional Learning, Jenny Wilkinson, Adrian Beavis, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Jenny Wilkinson

The Victorian Institute of Teaching implemented its new registration procedures for Provisionally Registered Teachers (PRTs) in 2004. A pilot version of these procedures was trialled in 2003, and evaluated by ACER (Kleinhenz and Ingvarson 2004). Background information about the development of the Standards and Professional Learning Project can be found in this report. As part of the process for full registration, PRTs were required to prepare a portfolio with three components: an analysis of teaching and learning, collegiate classroom activities and a list of and commentary on professional activities undertaken. In 2004 the new requirements for PRTs were extended to …

Secondary Teacher Workload Study : Report., Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Adrian Beavis, Helena Barwick, Imelda Carthy, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

This research, carried out by the Australian Council for Educational Research in 2004, looks at the hours worked, the kinds of work performed and the manageability of that work, for principals, middle managers and teachers in New Zealand secondary schools. This study was a recommendation of the Ministerial Taskforce on Secondary Teacher Remuneration which reported in 2003. The research was commissioned by the Ministry of Education. Fieldwork was initially conducted in twenty schools, mainly through individual interviews with principals and a small selection of middle managers and teachers. This work assisted the preparation of the survey instruments. The study consisted …

Research On Performance Pay For Teachers, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Jenny Wilkinson Feb 2010

Research On Performance Pay For Teachers, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

This report falls into three main sections, in accordance with the project brief. The first provides an overview of current pay arrangements and collective enterprise bargaining agreements for teachers in Australian schools. Within these arrangements, the report gives particular attention to provisions for performance-based pay schemes and to identifying potential impediments to the introduction of performance-based pay for teachers. The second part of the brief called for an overview of recent Australian and international research on the attitudes of stakeholders to performance-based pay schemes for teachers and the impact of these schemes on, for example, teacher retention, improved teaching standards, …

Supporting New Teachers In Victorian Schools : Making The Teacher Registration Process An Opportunity For Professional Learning, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Jenny Wilkinson Feb 2010

Supporting New Teachers In Victorian Schools : Making The Teacher Registration Process An Opportunity For Professional Learning, Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Lawrence Ingvarson, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

The VIT Standards and Professional Learning Project was seen to be leading to improvements in teaching practice across schools and playing a major role in reinforcing and/or establishing a culture of professional collaboration and professional learning in schools. That is likely to lead to improved student outcomes. The role of the school leadership is clearly very important in this as in any other major innovation. Principals and mentors were very positive about the program, and consistently reported higher levels of satisfaction with its implementation than did the Provisionally Registered Teachers. Primary teachers were in general more positive than secondary teachers. …

Reaching Their Potential : What's Working With Indigenous Students, Jenny Wilkinson

Jenny Wilkinson

What is working with Indigenous students and what can teachers and principals do to help right now? Plenty. The author outlines a program from the Indigenous Education Leadership Institute (IELI), a partnership between Education Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology. The IELI runs the five-day Stronger, Smarter Leadership Program, which aims to transform Indigenous educational outcomes, challenge mindsets, accountabilities and responsibilities, and pedagogy for improved outcomes. Participants have to return six weeks later for two days and present their proposals for change and outline what they done so far. The article outlines the changes and innovations that have occurred …

Teacher Workload And Effective Teaching : What Do Teachers Think?, Jenny Wilkinson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Jenny Wilkinson

Summaries of two major recent research reports into teachers’ workload and teachers’ work practices will be presented in this session: Secondary Teacher Workload Study and Primary (Elementary) Teacher Work Study. The research was carried out by the Australian Council for Educational Research for the New Zealand Ministry of Education. The purpose of the studies was to gain an understanding of the nature and patterns of teachers’ work, to explore practical and innovative ways in which teachers manage their work and to determine what factors cause work pressure for them. A particular focus of these studies was teacher perceptions of workload …
