Group 5. Eleven students participated. All eleven were assigned to the “undecided” Summerstart advising group, and all took fewer than 15 credits in the fall with three taking 13 and eight taking 14. Seven participants are female, three are students of color, and six transferred credits from high school. One participated in an FIG and one in an FYE. None are honors students, all eleven attended Summerstart, and one participated in fall athletics (football).

Freshmen are taking fewer credits than they have in the past, and this is potentially delaying their expected graduation. Lower credit loads also mean fewer FTE students and the possibility of falling short of state budgeted FTE. If the perceived problem is confirmed, WWU administrators would like to know why freshmen are taking fewer credits, and whether interventions are appropriate to encourage higher credit loads, or if more applicants should be admitted to fill the gap. To help answer these questions, the Office of Survey Research (OSR) conducted eight focus groups of freshmen during their second quarter at Western (Winter08). …

INTRODUCTION In fall of 1998, Western enrolled 2199 new freshmen; in the fall of 1999, 1725 of them returned, for a 78.4% retention rate. This study examine what influences freshman retention and also grade point average, the key indicator of academic adjustment and by far the most powerful predictor of retention. The orientation of this analysis, like all those performed by the Office of Institutional Research and Resource Planning, is toward policy. We seek to develop knowledge that may help Western serve its students and the public better-in this case by improving early academic adjustment and increasing retention. All Western …

Executive Summary: Since 1971, Western Washington University has utilized the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Student Information Survey to profile the characteristics, attitudes, values, educational achievements, and future goals of its incoming freshmen. Between 1971 and 1991 there were six administrations of the CIRP. This report uses those findings to examine the changes in WWU's in-coming freshmen over that twenty-year period. Raw data is also presented: that for the overall population in Appendix B, and by gender in Appendix C. Executive Summary: This report provides a summary of student responses to the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) survey given to Western's 1985 and 1989 incoming freshman classes. The CIRP survey is used to gather information about the characteristics, •• interests, and goals of first-time freshmen nationwide. The majority of incoming freshmen in both 1985 and 1989 were female, 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and native speakers of English. Western's 1989 freshman class was more ethnically diverse than its 1985 counterpart. The proportion of students who were Caucasian went down during this four-year period while the proportion of students from ethnic …
