Teaching Professionalism Skills To Secondary Students: An Improvement Science Dissertation On The Efficacy Of A Professionalism Skills System: An Improvement Science Study, James Weber

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research provided Salem Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) with much-needed information on how to teach and grade secondary students on professional skills. The research was conducted at The Career Technical Education Center (CTEC) in Salem, Oregon. CTEC employs 35 staff members who serve 780 high school students. A networked improvement community (NIC) met throughout the PDSA cycle to analyze and implement the research.

The NIC and CTEC staff developed a new system to teach, grade, and provide feedback on students' professional …

The Impact Of Using Social Media Platfrom Wechat For Formative Feedback Of Teaching And Learning On Student Satisfaction, Suxia Chen

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This quantitative study utilized a quasi-experimental design and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) as an analysis tool to measure the correlation between independent variables and dependent variables in SETs (student evaluations of teaching) in experimental and control groups. Social learning theory is a foundational theory for building the conceptual framework of this study. Two other theories—motivation theory and self-efficacy—are subfoundational theories to support the conceptual framework. The study applies social learning theory to motivate and enhance students’ self-efficacy. It analyzed the correlation between using WeChat for formative feedback and students’ satisfaction with teaching, as well as with response rates. …

The Effect Of Expressive Writing On Second-Grade Math Achievement And Math Anxiety, Hope Walter Feb 2018

The Effect Of Expressive Writing On Second-Grade Math Achievement And Math Anxiety, Hope Walter

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Eighty second-grade students participated in a five day study to assess the potential benefits of utilizing expressive writing as a tool to reduce math anxiety and increase math achievement in highly math-anxious (HMA), primary-age children. This quasi-experimental design used a three-way mixed ANOVA to assess if students with high math anxiety, as measured on the MASYC-R survey, would show decreased levels of math anxiety after expressively writing about mathematical concerns for one week, compared to their peers who wrote expressively about a topic of choice.

At posttest, many students did show an increase in math achievement and a decrease in …

Communicating Value: Understanding Adjunct Typology, Job Satisfaction Levels, And Professional Development Interests, Lisa P. Davidson Apr 2015

Communicating Value: Understanding Adjunct Typology, Job Satisfaction Levels, And Professional Development Interests, Lisa P. Davidson

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Higher education institutions are navigating budget cuts, changing enrollment, and the need to differentiate from the competition. Reductions in government funding and budgetary constraints are prompting universities to reduce the number of full-time, tenure-track faculty and rely more heavily on adjunct faculty to meet their demand for instructors. Therefore it is important to determine the distinct needs and satisfaction levels of this faculty group in order to provide appropriate resources and development opportunities for them. This study sought to determine if adjunct faculty job satisfaction levels differ based on adjunct typology (Gappa & Leslie, 1993) or institutional affiliation, and to …

The Relationship Between Reading Enjoyment, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Reading Outcomes In Pisa 2009, Luke Neff Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Reading Enjoyment, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Reading Outcomes In Pisa 2009, Luke Neff

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Over the past few decades, the United States has seen a shift in classroom reading instruction away from time spent reading for pleasure and practices like Sustained Silent Reading. While researchers have found a few positive relationships between time spent reading for enjoyment and educational outcomes, these limited findings have been unsatisfactory in convincing organizations like the National Reading Panel of the efficacy of Reading Enjoyment Time. This study uses the The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009 reading assessment and accompanying student questionnaires to determine the importance of Reading Enjoyment Time as a predictor of reading outcomes, especially …

An Exploration Of Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy, Stephanie Boni Aug 2014

An Exploration Of Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy, Stephanie Boni

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This qualitative study uses semi-structured interviews and participant reflective journals to explore the perceptions of pre-service teachers' self-efficacy and sense of readiness to enter the teaching profession. The six participants were graduate students in a Master of Arts in Teaching program from the same university. The study took place at the end of their year-long field placement as they were completing a three-week solo teaching experience. Consistent with current literature, the participants identified the most influential factor to self-efficacy to be the relationship and influence of their cooperating teacher. Other areas of influence were classroom management, student achievement data, and …

At the latest PME-NA (35), a working group met on the topic of negative numbers. Groups presented on their research within one or more categories related to negative integers: role of contexts, models, historical development, algebra, student understanding, and teacher knowledge (Lamb et al., 2013). We began a productive discussion on issues related to each of these categories and would like to broaden the discussion with the inclusion of members from the international community. Further we aim to develop research collaborations around mutual areas of interest.

The Effects Of The Fast Start Program On The Reading Achievement Of Emergent And Beginning Readers: A Replication And Extension, Pamela R. Mears

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study replicated the Stevenson (2001) study to determine the effectiveness of the Fast Start parent tutoring program on student success in reading achievement. Additionally, data gathered from the parent participants were analyzed including parent's perceptions of the program, their confidence level in tutoring their child, and the parents' level of mastery of the concepts of tutoring before working with their child. At the beginning of the school year, 36 kindergarten parent-student …
