Faculty Perceptions Of Dyadic Advising Relationships, Power, And Cultural Consciousness On College Student Learning Outcomes, Hind Albana

Abstract

Academic advising in institutions of higher education lack consistent assessment and evaluation of practices impairing the ability to define the role, objectives, and methods utilized. Over-reliance on student satisfaction surveys for evaluating advising reinforces this phenomenon. To break the cycle, this study used survey responses from a nationwide sample (N = 156) of faculty advisors from public and private 4-year colleges and universities to examine the relationship between and among the constructs of a working relationship, shared power, cultural consciousness, and student learning outcomes. The questionnaire instrument score produced a Cronbach's alpha of .927, illustrating substantially strong internal consistency. …

The purpose of this study was to reveal whether there is a relationship between students' volume of text messaging and formal writing performance on the Scholastic Aptitude Test writing section. The study also examined gender as a contributing variable in this measure. As a supplementary correlation, student text message volume was also compared to their Writing I course final grade. The study focused solely on texting because texting has become the preferred method of telecommunication among teens and young adults (Lindley, 2008, p. 19). Introduction The sample of students whose records were analyzed in the Math Placement Test study published by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing earlier this month contained very few students who had taken the Basic Algebra level of the placement test. Executive Summary: The Math Placement Tests have been used by all four-year institutions in the state of Washington to aid in the placement of students into their first college-level mathematics course since 1984. This report was prepared in response to concerns of Western Washington University's Mathematics Department regarding the usefulness of. the placement tests in correctly placing students in mathematics courses. The relationships of the math placement tests to final mathematics course grade and other indicators of academic achievement, including high school GPA, WPCT-Q score, and SAT-M score were evaluated.
