An Educational Intervention To Raise Obesity Awareness, The Importance Of Follow-Up, And The Need To Utilize Recommended Strategies And Interventions Among Advanced Care Practitioners In A Sleep Center Setting, Cindy L. Thomas

Obesity is a national epidemic that affects approximately 40% of adult Americans. A lack of advanced practitioner (AP) knowledge about obesity and follow-up may contribute to the obesity epidemic. Diagnosing obesity and beginning prompt weight loss (WL) management with the aim to prevent the development or progression of chronic illnesses associated with obesity is imperative. Research has shown that WL of 5% to 10% of initial body weight can reverse or reduce the onset of chronic illnesses. Executive Summary: In response to both internal and national findings and concerns, the first Western Washington University Lifestyles Project Survey of alcohol and drug usage among Western students was conducted in 1992 as part of the University's on-going effort (a) to investigate students' college experience both in and out of the classroom; (b) to enhance those experiences which lead to personal and academic success; and (c) to reduce risk factors jeopardizing student success. Executive Summary: In 1994, first-time in-coming frosh who entered Western Washington University in 1985 were resurveyed. Survey administered were able to contact and receive completed survey forms from 85 of the original1180 frosh who filled out a CIRP (frosh) survey at Western in 1985. Though the number of participants nine years later was small compared to the original sample, it was also fairly representative. The gender ratio between the two years was nearly identical, as was ethnicity. Most of the class of 1985 had partners in 1994 (74.1%), though only half reported being married (50.2%). Introduction Students' ability to complete degrees in a timely manner has become one of the key new issues in higher education. Enrollment increases along with resource cuts have created increasing problems for student progress, which Western has been confronting through curricular changes, enrollment management policy changes, and higher workload for faculty and staff. At the same time, increases in tuition have highlighted students' felt need for efficient progress. Two recent findings illustrate the impact of these pressures on the university. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Between Summer, 1992 and Spring, 1993, 403 Masters degrees were awarded at Western. The first survey of Masters recipients by the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing, conducted in Spring, 1994, contacted 290 (72.9%) of them. The majority of Western's Masters recipients (58.6%) are women. One in six (18.1%) are not U.S. citizens; fewer (5.8%) are U.S. minority group members. Ages are diverse. The oldest was 63 at graduation; the youngest, 23. One-fourth (28.9%) were over 40. Over half (57.1%) received their undergraduate training in Washington, 28.9% at Western.
