The purpose for this quantitative non-experimental, correlational, explanatory study was to determine the predictive accuracy of family and community demographic variables found in United States census data at the community level for the OST in reading. Specifically, the study extended the work in order to analyze the reading student proficiency results from the 2017 OST for third grade, and 2010 Ohio census data. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive accuracy of community and family demographic variables, which are found through the use of the 2010 U.S. Census data, on the percentage of students at a district level who are Meeting or Exceeding Expectations on the 2016 New Jersey PARCC in Algebra 1 and Grade 10 English Language Arts/Literacy. This qualitative case study addressed a suburban school district's placement of academically at-risk English language arts (ELA) 9th graders as the district transitions from the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) to use of the unfamiliar and controversial Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). Based on the theoretical frameworks of the zone of proximal development, cognitive apprenticeship, and Bandura's model of self-efficacy, the purpose was to understand the characteristics of struggling (labeled 'academic') ELA students, placement practices and perceptions of these practices, and placement improvements. The onus of this dissertation was to evaluate the educational conditions of Mexican American students forty years after the Mexican American Education Study published a six-volume study detailing the findings of the Mexican American Education Study (1970-1974). The MAES study focused on five southwest states Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. To learn the current status of Mexican American students, a three-tier scale of analysis was created. Each level of analysis had a specific focus: macro, meso, and micro.
