The Maximum Queen’S Problem With Pawns, Doug Chatham
The Maximum Queen’S Problem With Pawns, Doug Chatham
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The classic n-queens problem asks for placements of just n mutually non-attacking queens on an n × n board. By adding enough pawns, we can arrange to fill roughly one-quarter of the board with mutually non-attacking queens. How many pawns do we need? We discuss that question for square boards as well as rectangular m × n boards.

Video Captions For Online Courses: Do Youtube’S Auto-Generated Captions Meet Deaf Students’ Needs?, Becky Sue Parton
Video Captions For Online Courses: Do Youtube’S Auto-Generated Captions Meet Deaf Students’ Needs?, Becky Sue Parton

Providing captions for videos used in online courses is an area of interest for institutions of higher education. There are legal and ethical ramifications as well as time constraints to consider. Captioning tools are available, but some universities rely on the auto-generated YouTube captions. This study looked at a particular type of video—the weekly informal news update created by individual professors for their online classes—to see if automatic captions (also known as subtitles) are sufficiently accurate to meet the needs of deaf students. A total of 68 minutes of video captions were analysed and 525 phrase-level errors were found. On …

On April 27, 1864, Hawley Varnum Needham left his family farm at Loda, Illinois and traveled to nearby Onarga to enlist in the Union Army. He promised his father he would return before the fall harvest. His adventures in the army would take him to the Jackson Purchase of Kentucky where he was stationed at the Federal bastion at Columbus and at military posts in Paducah and Mayfield. He captured his daily experiences throughout the turbulent spring and summer of 1864 in his diary.

Willard Rouse Jillson and the Crystal Cave of Sloans Valley, Kentucky NSS News (National Speleological Society) 77(August 2019), 12-24 With nearly 25 miles of passages, Sloans Valley Cave in the southeastern part of the state is the 4th longest cave in Kentucky and ranks #23 in the United States. The imposing karst window known as Great Rock Sink has historically been the most popular access point and the area within, known as Crystal Cave, was operated as a show cave until submerged in early 1951 by the impoundment of Lake Cumberland. This presentation traces the exploration history of Sloans Valley, …
Towards A More User Friendly Technique For Predicting Photovoltaic Energy Output, Hans Chapman, Michael Case, Tarsha Eason, Trevor Bennett, Audra Morrison
Towards A More User Friendly Technique For Predicting Photovoltaic Energy Output, Hans Chapman, Michael Case, Tarsha Eason, Trevor Bennett, Audra Morrison

Several factors impact the power output from solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. Some are deterministic and controllable and others are uncontrollable (e.g., meteorological conditions), yet critical to performance. The objective of this paper is to assess the relationship between the meteorological variables and the power output of a mono silicon PV module using Multiple Linear Regression modelling. The approach involved exposing one mono-silicon photovoltaic module to the open atmosphere for a period of time and measuring the electrical energy output as a function of natural variation in the meteorological factors. A regression model for the power output was developed and significant …
