A Study Of The Relationship Between Academic Promise Test Scores And Subsequent Achievement Test Scores And Course Grades At The Eighth Grade Level, Dallas B. Vaughan

The Academic Promise Test has been used to predict achievement over a three-month period. A study is needed to determine if the APT can predict achievement over a longer period of time (an academic year). This study is intended to determine how well the APT can predict pupils' achievement over a one year period on an achievement test battery and in terms of their average grades.

The hypotheses tested in this study are concerned with the efficacy of different methods of trying to aid underachievers. Specifically they are: 1. There is no difference in academic achievement as reflected in grade-point-average between students who received group counseling, special study instruction and no special treatment. 2. The small high school has some problems to overcome in order to do an effective job in the guidance of its young people. It is difficult for the staff to find time for guidance activities in the busy schedule of today's curriculum. Released time is very necessary if effective counseling is to be done.

Another problan to be faced is the lack of trained personnel to head the guidance program. The high school principal must find a capable person or else head the program himself.
