In this article, the authors examine the nature of interest in science as represented in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006 data. They discuss the interconnections between measures of knowledge, affect, and value as components of interest in science. Working from a perspective acknowledging that many of the models of motivation represented in the literature have been developed in Western countries, the authors investigated whether the ways that knowledge, affect, and value combine in the structure of students' interest in science might vary in line with historical and cultural traditions. Research has shown that successful mathematics students use different types of strategies from those struggling with mathematics. Year 4 students were tested using the One Minute Tests of Basic Number Facts and a paper and pencil Number Screening Test developed by the author and colleagues. Observation of the students during the assessment procedures highlighted the vast difference in the students' speed and accuracy when recalling basic facts and the types of strategies they used when solving mathematical tasks. Dicot: Analysing Classroom Tests With The Rasch Model, Geoff Masters

A computer program (DICOT) for the Rasch analysis of classroom tests is described. Results are presented in a simple, self-explanatory form, and person ability and item difficulty estimates are expressed in a metric like the one with which teachers and parents are already familiar. Person and item fit statistics provide an opportunity to diagnose strengths and weaknesses of individual children and to identify items which are problematic.
