School Culture, Equity, And Student Academic Performance In A Rural Appalachian School, Roger Cleveland, Jennifer Chambers, Cretia Mainus, Norman Powell, Rose Skepple, Tiffany Tyler, April Wood
Norman W. Powell
The authors provide an overview of a culture-equity audit conducted in a rural Appalachian school. The purpose was to collect information that would assist the school to optimize student academic performance. School culture is critical to establishing successful school learning environments. It provides one of the most significant foundations for successful student achievement (Cleveland, Powell, Saddler, &Tyler, 2008). Some studies suggest that educational leaders could play significant roles in culture building (Deal, 1990, 1994; Levine, 1989; Parish & Aquila, 1996; Pritchard et al., 2005). A culture audit provides an opportunity to learn about the culture of a school or district. …

Confronting The Juggernaut: Establishing Pro-Diversity Initiatives At Institutions Of Higher Learning, Norman Powell
Norman W. Powell
As general and student populations become increasingly multicultural, institutions of higher learning have taken steps to implement diversity initiatives and programs. Regional and national accrediting bodies and councils have included requirements calling for the implementation of diversity initiatives at universities and colleges. In response, these institutions have established offices, created high-level administrative positions, and have developed campus centers that focus on diversity and intercultural issues. Based on previous and current experience, the author describes several diversity programs and strategies that have been implemented at post-secondary institutions. Much of the impetus for these institutions to develop diversity programs comes from the …

Youth And Administrator Perspectives On Transition In Kentucky's State Agency Schools, Norman Powell, Amy Marshall, Doris Pierce, Ronnie Nolan

Students, a large percentage with disabilities, are at high risk for poor post-secondary outcomes in nontraditional state agency schools. This mixed methods study described transition within Kentucky's state agency education programs, from the perspectives of youth and administrators. Results indicated: that transition is more narrowly defined within alternative education programs; that key strengths of transition practice are present in nontraditional schools; and that the coordination barriers within this fluid interagency transition system are most apparent in students' frequent inter-setting transitions between nontraditional and home schools.

Kentucky Youth At Risk Transitions: A Report To The Commonwealth, Doris Pierce, Norman Powell, Amy Marshall, Ronnie Nolan, Elaine Fehringer
Norman W. Powell
In the Commonwealth of Kentucky, there are over 22,000 youth being educated in programs that are funded, operated or contracted by state agencies. These state agency children come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and bring a multiplicity of social, psychological, behavioral and educational problems that challenge teachers and staffs. These particular Kentucky students, more than any others, are at the greatest risk of not making successful transitions into adulthood. It is critical that all such young people be afforded the highest quality of transition planning and support so that they can become successful and productive adults.

The Conflict Cycle: A Useful Model For Youth And Child Care Workers, Norman Powell
Norman W. Powell
The model makes the important assumption that the quality of early life experiences of children can significantly affect their personality development. The three preconditioning components are the self-concept, the worldview, and values. The components of the conflict cycle are stress, feelings, behavior, and response. The model is applied in analyzing an example of a negative power struggle between a child care worker and a child. The model can be used to train staff members and children to better understand daily conflicts and the ways to avoid destructive conflict situations. The model can also be used to help parents better understand …
