Paraprofessionals are utilized throughout the school environment on many different levels from recess supervision to carrying out lesson plans and behavior modification strategies. There are many questions and concerns voiced by professionals within education as how to use these employees in the most effective manner, as well as looking at where their roles should begin and end. This study used a qualitative method of research to look at the perspectives of paraprofessionals in one rural district in the Midwest as they relate to the successes and needs for improvement within this district. Media broadcasts of rampage school shootings can raise anxiety for parents, school officials and students. Violence prevention in schools is a national priority. It's time to take a closer look at what can be done to make schools safer. The results indicate that heightening school security and implementing zero tolerance policies are not the solution to the problem. Parent psycho-education, cognitive therapy, relaxation, self- monitoring and social skills training are more effective.

The Semantic Differential: A Measurement Of Meaning In One School's Mission, Emily A. Stull

This research describes the use of a semantic differential to measure the differences in stakeholders' perceptions of one school's mission. The study examines informal participant observations and data from the semantic differential to provide empirical evidence that supports Terry's (1993) leadership diagnostic. The findings reveal significant differences between teacher role and other stakeholders' perceptions of mission implying the importance of shared meaning among school stakeholders: increased organizational health and student achievement.

Teaching for four years, I have first-hand experience of what it is like teaching in two distinctly different types of classrooms. My first year was difficult as I was often alone in my room with little guidance or help from fellow teachers. The following three years, our school began to implement teaming and I began to see the benefits of it right before my eyes. This paper will examine some of the benefits for students, parents, and teachers. It will also discuss different types of teams or professional learning communities that can exist in a school.
