The combined position of University Archivist and Library Department Chair in the James E. Brooks Library at Central Washington University (CWU) in Ellensburg, Washington is unique and draws cu- riosity as to what other academic libraries have department chairs and what is their specific area of librarianship. This article provides a review of literature on the responsibilities of department chairs and their vitality, as well as publications specifically referencing library department chairs. The purpose of the study was to develop a model faculty handbook to promote a shared vision and a collaborative school culture. To accomplish this purpose, a review of related literature was conducted. Related information and materials from selected sources were obtained and analyzed. The purpose of the study was to indicate the importance of the role of the principal in relation to morale. In presenting the material surveyed, the primary area will be the human relationship between the principal and the staff. Since most authorities view this point as the most important single aspect of morale, no outside forces will be dealt with. The study is limited primarily to the role of the secondary principal.
