Evaluating Kinetic Family Drawings As A Screening Device For The Identification Of At-Risk First Graders In Public Schools, Deena M. Harral Aug 1994

Evaluating Kinetic Family Drawings As A Screening Device For The Identification Of At-Risk First Graders In Public Schools, Deena M. Harral

Graduate Theses

The assessment and evaluation of the Kinetic Family Drawing Instrument as a screening device was used to identify possible "at risk” first grade students in public school. It was hypothesized that the KFD would serve as a better means of identification than teacher referral alone. Seventy-five first grade students from a Chapter I school participated in the study. A check list of seven classroom behaviors was given to the teachers of the participating students to identify "at risk" behaviors in the classroom. It was found that if the teacher check list were used as the sole source of "at risk" …

The Effects Of Two Models Of Positive Feedback Of Children's Motivation, Judith Margaret Lynch May 1994

The Effects Of Two Models Of Positive Feedback Of Children's Motivation, Judith Margaret Lynch

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the type of written or verbal positive comment regarding a child's accomplishment influences subsequent interest in a task. A preliminary investigation of literature revealed that often rewards and praise negatively alter children's behavior. The writer tested the hypothesis derived from this investigation that non- evaluative descriptive comments, commonly called encouragement, positively affect children more than evaluative praise comments. 32 kindergarten and 36 third grade children received evaluative praise comments and 31 kindergarten and 42 third grade children received non- evaluative descriptive comments on drawings for three days. The fourth day, children …

Movement Education In A Modified Montessori Pre-School Classroom, Corinne Q. Evans May 1994

Movement Education In A Modified Montessori Pre-School Classroom, Corinne Q. Evans

Graduate Theses

A movement education program was designed to see what effect such a program would have on the motor skills of three year old children. Movement tasks and skills were introduced to the class as a whole. The rationale of this program is based on the observations of Piaget, Montessori, Gisell, and other theorists. The lessons are divided into three major areas of Body Awareness, Directionality, and Basic Body Movements. The movement education program was presented to ten (10) three year old students; while six (6) other three year old students comprised the control group. Pre-and post-tests of movement skills were …

The Language/Literacy Connection: Aiding The Dysnomic Reader, Danette Lipten Jan 1994

The Language/Literacy Connection: Aiding The Dysnomic Reader, Danette Lipten

Graduate Student Independent Studies

This study examines word-finding difficulties in the oral language of children and their impact on literacy learning. It presents suggestions for remediation in both domains, but focuses primarily on aiding the dysnomic reader. Specific strategies are discussed which are applicable to the teaching of normal emergent readers and that can be particularly useful to readers experiencing retrieval problems. A brief case study is presented of a child who is affected by dysnomia, along with a description of the author's work with this child. Appendices include games and sample lessons.

The Effects Of Multiage Grouping On Primary Students, Susan Mooney Jan 1994

The Effects Of Multiage Grouping On Primary Students, Susan Mooney

Graduate Research Papers

This study analyzes the literature regarding the appropriateness of grouping children in multiage groups. The term multiage groups is defined here as the deliberate assembling of pupils together who are of, at least two or three chronological age groups.

Three issues are discussed in this regard: (1) What are the characteristics of the multiage approach? (2) Why is the multiage grouping approach becoming more popular? (3) What are the standards which would be applied when assigning children to multiage groups?

The history of multiage groups is addressed as well as the characteristics and reasons for the return in popularity of …

Impact Of Missed Opportunities To Vaccinate Preschool-Aged Children On Vaccination Levels--Selected Us Cities, David L. Wood, B. Guyer, L. Rodewald, P. Szilagyi, A. Arbeter Dec 1993

Impact Of Missed Opportunities To Vaccinate Preschool-Aged Children On Vaccination Levels--Selected Us Cities, David L. Wood, B. Guyer, L. Rodewald, P. Szilagyi, A. Arbeter

David L. Wood

Vaccination coverage levels among 2-year-old children for each of three routinely recommended vaccines--diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis (DTP), oral poliovirus (OPV), and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)--are lower than the national Childhood Immunization Initiative (CII) goal of 90% coverage for these vaccines (1.2). During 1991-1992, CDC awarded contracts to four universities (in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and Rochester, New York) to conduct evaluations to identify causes of undervaccination, characterize and quantify missed opportunities (MOs) to vaccinate, and assess their programmatic importance. The evaluations targeted high-risk racial/ethnic minority children in inner-city settings in the four urban sites. This report summarizes selected findings* from …
