This teaching portfolio contains a compilation of the author’s personal teaching experiences and research interests while in the Master of Second Language Teaching (MSLT) program at Utah State University (USU). The sections of this portfolio highlight collaboration with current USU professors in the field of teaching English as a second language and the author’s personal experiences working in a second-grade elementary school classroom as well as teaching English in a community education setting. This paper represents a one year study of the steps taken to devise and implement an English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. The study involves analyzing the teaching / learning environment; designing, implementing and evaluating the program; and analyzing the results for future programs of this nature. The paper focuses on the intermediate and advanced ESL student and includes suggestions for materials development at each particular level. This report describes the American Heritage New Illustrated History of the United States, which is a sixteen-volume set of chronologically ordered books. It also presents student-teacher objectives devised for its use following a one-semester course in which it was used at the secondary level. In formulating the objectives, I attempted to devise a course very much like a regular secondary or college-level American History course in which ESL students would have an opportunity to experience something more than a superficial or cursory exposure to that history. This is a course outline for a 16+hour teacher-training workshop. It is designed for about 16 participants. The purpose of the workshop is to engage teachers and prospective teachers in the processes of self evaluation, goal formation and the development/application of more effective ways to teach. This is done through a series of introspective/extra-spective exercises based on four central questions:
What kind of teacher are you now? What is teaching/learning? How do you want to be as a teacher? How can you reach your objectives?
