Genius Culture: How We Influence Student Identity In Stem, Larry L. Bowman Jr. Jun 2023

Genius Culture: How We Influence Student Identity In Stem, Larry L. Bowman Jr.

ETSU Faculty Works

In Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, identity and belonging are affected by how students view themselves as belonging in STEM or not. The movement to help students understand that anyone can be successful in STEM is an incredibly important one. However, how students construct their identities within STEM is important for maintaining their engagement within STEM fields over time. If we condition students to expect positive feedback for having an aptitude in a STEM field early-on, what I deem genius culture, we risk helping these students develop resilience when faced with challenges. Although, if we tell students …

Teacher educators in an undergraduate elementary teacher certification program at a large university in the United States redesigned the traditional program to integrate STEM learning across multiple courses. During this Integrated STEM Semester, typically taken during the fifth semester of the undergraduate program, pre-service teachers (PSTs) enroll in mathematics content, mathematics methods, science methods, instructional technology, and practicum courses.

Developing Teachers’ Intentions Of Incorporating Socioscientific Issues In Lesson Design, Zachary Minken, Augusto Z. Macalalag Jr., Greer Richardson Oct 2020

Developing Teachers’ Intentions Of Incorporating Socioscientific Issues In Lesson Design, Zachary Minken, Augusto Z. Macalalag Jr., Greer Richardson

Faculty Curated Graduate Works

In an effort to increase students’ informed decisions and evidence-based argumentation and perspective taking in the STEM classroom, this case study explored the ways in which teachers’ thinking and intention of incorporating Socioscientific Issues (SSI) into their lesson plans change after participating in an experiential workshop. Recognizing the difficulties inherent in SSI implementation, the day-long teacher development implemented a multi-layered approach which included declarative and procedural knowledge construction, namely understanding SSI components, SSI lesson planning, and learning STEM topics through the SSI framework. Pre-post conference questionnaires and lesson analysis showed that teachers were adept in developing SSI-focused lessons. In addition, …

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article discusses the impacts of STEM project-/problem-based learning (PBL) on students. Topics includes prototyping as a key transition element for PBL process which develop self-efficacy individually; use of PBL as a dynamic learning process, allows learners to gain experiences with real-world applicability; and PBL skillsets that requires students to use critical-thinking processes. It mentions that PBL's goal is to make behavioral changes by long term training.

Examining The Cross-Cultural Experience Of Eight Chinese International Efl Students Studying Stem Disciplines In Doctoral Programs At A Large Public Research University, Xiuyuan Yang Nov 2018

Examining The Cross-Cultural Experience Of Eight Chinese International Efl Students Studying Stem Disciplines In Doctoral Programs At A Large Public Research University, Xiuyuan Yang

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chinese international students’ difficulties in adjusting to the U.S. classrooms has long been overlooked. They have been stereotyped as not experiencing any problems as a result of their excellence at all levels of education, which also implies that they have been succeeding at handling cross-cultural issues. Research which focuses on Chinese international students are usually generated in the area of second language learning or pedagogical methods, Chinese international students’ cross-cultural experience has not been fully explored. The present study was hence conducted to fill the literature gap. Its results could lead to an improvement of Chinese international EFL students’ studying …

Using Precision In Stem Language: A Qualitative Look, Mary M. Capraro, Ali Bricer, Melva R. Grant, Yvonna S. Lincoln

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Teachers need to develop a variety of pedagogical strategies that can encourage precise and accurate communication - an extremely important 21st century skill. Precision with STEM oral language is essential. Emphasizing oral communication with precise language in combination with increased spatial skills with modeling can improve the chances of success in STEM courses and later in making STEM career choices. The participants were 14 middle and high school teachers who participated in a week of professional development (PD). The Aural/Spatial Interactions and Invariant Components of Vocabulary for STEM Content Area Specialists (AS-STEM) was administered to teacher groups to examine how …

Attracting K-12 Students Towards Engineering Disciplines With Project Based Learning Modules, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Low enrollment and high attrition rates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based degree programs have created a workforce problem in industries like shipbuilding and repair which are important for national security. Part of this problem can be attributed to pedagogical issues like lack of engaging hands-on activities utilized for science and math education in middle and high schools. Lack of student interest in technical careers can also be attributed to lack of an integrated approach in teaching math, science and technical education. To engage student's interest in the technical career path, it is important that students establish a …
