Knowledge Mapping: A System For The Design And Construction Of Curricula, Linda M. Tipper

This article presents a concise system for guiding content planners in the selection and analysis of content for any curriculum. The Knowledge Mapping system is compared to other curriculum development systems and is shown to meet some current needs which these systems have not met. An analysis of the Knowledge Map is provided and a demonstration of the impact that Knowledge Mapping can have on curriculum construction is presented. The demonstration illustrates that the use of this system can provide a tool for content planners which leads to a greater consistency between objectives and evaluation materials. "American Arts and Artists of the Twentieth Century: 1900-1941" is a prepared course of study developed for the high-school or junior-college-level humanities student. One to three literary, musical, and visual artists were selected to represent a decade. Because of the amount of material to be covered, and because of the limited time in which to present it, the first four decades of the twentieth century are considered.

The study consists of fifty, one-hour sessions which are divided into two units: "The First Two Decades: 1900-1918"; and "Between the Wars: 1919-1941." Each unit is made up of individual lessons devoted to …

This project was developed to provide an orderly plan for the introduction of microcomputers into the total curriculum. A computer curriculum was developed that became a vibrant part of the total experience at the elementary level. The uniqueness of an elementary curriculum has been the manner in which each subject area complemented the other. Science, for example, has not been taught as an independent content area. It has been taught as an extension of the reading program. Also computer instruction must be blended with the other disciplines.
