This brief article describes the approach to long-term projects used with young children in the city-run preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. In particular, it explains how the learning environment and the guidance of the teacher invite them into a project, then help them sustain and conclude it.

Many aspects of the Reggio Emilia experience are fascinating to American educators, but perhaps none more than the role of the teacher. How do teachers (infant-toddler and preschool) support, facilitate, and guide children to the complex levels seen in classroom interactions as well as the creative works children produce? The progressive educational systems of some regions of Italyare becoming increasingly recognized by educators and researchers, including those from North America, seeking insight into diverse educational approaches from the international community. This paper represents a case study of Filastrocca (“Nursery Rhyme”), a preschool in the Tuscan city of Pistoia. Filastrocca proclaims a special mission related to books, storytelling, and the imagination, and appears to offer a unique environment that supports children’s active and enthusiastic engagement in complex literacy discussions and activities. Experiences in nature provide an easily accessible pathway to addressing standards. If teachers provide time in the natural world children are using this environment to learn. The outdoor environment gives teachers a perfect location and the tools to teach and meet standards in the early childhood classroom.
