Service learning (or community engaged learning) is a rapidly growing form of experiential education that results in mutually beneficial partnerships between students, institutions and local communities. SL (or CEL) is well-developed at European universities, and a variety of networks exist to further SL as a pedagogy. We examined how a range of universities consider SL a part of their institutional missions, and if explicit connections were made between SL and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (a universal framework of 17 goals to achieve by 2030) and the university’s third mission (an orientation toward the public good). This research study was designed to focus on what factors can contribute to the successful integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) education programs for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) students within the community. The goal of this study is to determine which factors are contributing to the lack of engagement among BIPOC students in STEAM education and how educators can mitigate these factors. Recognizing students’ cultural experiences as a necessary part of learning can ultimately create learning spaces which are more effective. The purpose of this research is to construct a detailed picture of teacher education in the arts within Ontario, with a specific focus on the Primary-Junior arts discipline. This project will survey publicly-funded educational institutions in order to create a baseline of information on arts teacher education. This foundational information will allow for differences to be identified between pre-service teacher arts programs, and will also initiate a dialogue as to whether or not arts programs are equitably administered throughout the province.
