Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University researchers analyzed 811 (118 faculty and 693 student) comments from open response areas of a survey to determine the perception of faculty regarding group work in the academic setting. The biggest issue noted by both groups was allocation of grades for group members. Students perceived that all students received the same grade in a group project, regardless of effort. Most faculty did not share that perception, but noted difficulties in assigning group grades as well. The Value Of Academic Group Work: Faculty And Student Perceptions, Joanne Labeouf, John Griffith, Marian Schultz

This research examined student and instructor perceptions on group work requirements in academic coursework. Results for 330 faculty and 1,589 students were examined. The study found that most faculty believed group work had academic value, had practical work applications and group project grades reflected individual contributions. Most faculty disagreed that all students working on a group project received the same grade regardless of effort; however the majority of students expressed the opposite view.
