Teaching And Learning As Wayfaring, Martin Connell Sj Oct 2008

Teaching And Learning As Wayfaring, Martin Connell Sj

Martin T. Connell, S.J.

The article discusses how the wayfaring voyage made by St. Brendan to the Promised Land of the Saints contrasts sharply with following the linear, factory-model curriculum common in schools in the U.S. When based on a linear, technical model, it says that a school is perceived as an activity that principally entails both teachers and students following a map through a curriculum with few chances for wayfaring. Moreover, St. Brendan is considered as the patron saint of teachers who consider inquiry as a tool to promote learning and as a way of being.

The iPod digital music player has been available since late 2001, and even in higher education, its presence has been seen, although mostly in the hands of students and rarely for outcomes-based educational purposes. In 2004, Duke University provided free iPods to all 1,650 first year students, which subsequently enabled faculty to create learning opportunities, which actively engaged students to integrate digital audio and more into their lessons. Our study takes an alternate approach in which the Center for Teaching and Learning provided a small group of faculty (n=11) from different disciplines with a free iPod, microphone, training, support and …

One of the most common communication tools in online courses is the threaded discussion. With a growing number of students participating in online education comes the potential for an increase in faculty load. The reviewed courses provided over 1500 threads for two sections of a graduate course at a Mountain Region University. The number of threads that are produced by a student accounts for countless hours of reading, processing, …
