Global Studies Initiatives in Social Sciences Pilot Project
This interactive presentation describes the experiences of faculty in the anthropology and sociology departments, along with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Parkland College, as they redesign courses to incorporate more international research and resources. The slides also discuss approaches to instructional design that are quick and easy and provide practical resources and tools to help design or re-design curriculum.

I will explore alternative methods for teaching developmental students. Traditional methods of teaching grammar and writing have already failed most of these students. We cannot offer them the same material in the same way without expecting the same results. I will look at the current research of various learning styles and multiple intelligences, and adapt my teaching methods accordingly. I want to rethink what my colleagues and I do in the classroom and find ways to help our students be more successful, as students, as learners, and as future contributors in the work force. The following weaknesses are in the part-time teaGhing area of the CCS Program:
- 2 to 5 new part-time teachers are hired each year
- Most part-time teachers have no college level teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with college comprehension teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with study skills teaching experience
- An annual teacher turnover with no trained replacements
- There is limited time available to train staff adequately.
I propose to research, design, and videotape 20 to 25 teacher training videos for all three developmental levels of CCS including, but not limited to, reading comprehension methods and study skills. Instructional videos are a …
