Side By Side : An Exploration Of Family Programs In New York City And Three Pilot Family Programs At Dia : Beacon, Jeanne Parkhurst

This independent study includes a review of literature about learning theories relevant to museum education, family learning, and family learning in museums. This exploration also includes observations done at six art museums in New York City. As a result of these observations I outline teaching techniques for "best practice" methods while also offering first-hand insight into the unique and complex dynamic of family learning in museums. Finally, I describe my process for developing and implementing three pilot family programs a Dia : Beacon, a contemporary art museum in Beacon, NY which is part of the Dia Art Foundation.

The imagination is central to all learning. This paper provides science educators with a better understanding of imagination's role in learning and how it may be routinely engaged in the education of budding scientists. Both theoretical and practical dimensions are addressed. Part one defines the imagination, provides an overview of Kieran Egan's (1997) theory of lmaginative Education, introduces Egan's framework for developing lessons using Imaginative Education, and provides an argument for imaginative science education. High school graduation rates depend in part on successful transitions from middle school to high school. For Special Education students in particular, programs are needed to address their academic, social, and personals needs in preparation for this important developmental shift. Service Learning and the Demystification of Special Education process are two approaches that have proven helpful.
