Disciplinary Measures In Primary Classrooms, Anna Willems
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Abstract
The experiment done by the researcher analyzed the effectiveness of each of the research-based disciplinary strategies commonly used in elementary classrooms. These strategies include positive reinforcement, increased movement in the classroom during instructional time, increased parent communication, and reinforcement of the classroom rules/expectations. The strategies’ effectiveness were tracked through behavioral charts kept by each of the students and marked by the classroom teacher throughout the day. Comprehensive data was sent back to parents on a weekly basis to update them on student behavior. The effectiveness on the charts were proven by the number of interruptions throughout each class period. …

Black Girls In 3d Disruptive, Defiant, And Disrespectful: Case Studies Of Culturally Responsive And Sustaining Classroom Management Practices In An Urban Middle School, Janeen Perry-Campbell
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
Extensive research has been conducted on the disproportionate amount of suspensions that occur among Black boys, however, there is an emerging body of research that suggests that the rate of suspensions among Black girls is increasing. The most common behaviors that Black girls receive office referrals for, are subjective behaviors such as being disruptive, defiant, and disrespectful. (Nunn, 2018). The purpose of this study was to examine how Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (CRCM) strategies reduce the disproportionate amount of suspensions that Black girls received. This qualitative study conducted through case studies focused on how the teachers’ culturally responsive and sustaining …

Motivating Students Positively Through Restorative Justice Discipline, Peyton Dejong, Emily Trupe, Eric Zwingel
Motivating Students Positively Through Restorative Justice Discipline, Peyton Dejong, Emily Trupe, Eric Zwingel
Empowering Research for Educators
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of discipline formats on student development and analyze if the practice of restorative justice can decrease the school to prison pipeline. Does criminalizing every discrepancy against the law create better law-abiding citizens? Is the zero-tolerance policy change an effective mechanism for school discipline? Do restorative justice practices reduce the school to prison pipeline? To investigate this, the infraction rates at various high schools have been observed in regard to their discipline practices to analyze the number of incidences that students incur and how they were managed.

Education As A Moral Responsibility: Foucault's Subjectivity And Confucian Cultivation, Wei Guan
Education As A Moral Responsibility: Foucault's Subjectivity And Confucian Cultivation, Wei Guan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The current state of education focusing on standards and assessment, according to Wu (2004), reduces education to “technical problems and individual deficiencies, subject to surveillance and quality managerial procedures” (p. 308). This work uses Foucault’s discourses of discipline and power to understand standardization as a political utility of control that makes children docile subjects through “a set of practices by which one can acquire and assimilate” (Foucault, 1988, p. 31). The process of standardization provides an ineffective grounding for achieving a worthwhile life as children are shaped as results-driven individuals (Shun & Wong, 2004). Baker (2008) believes that only through …

The final faculty sample consisted of 448 participants, of which 309 were United States-educated (US-educated), and 139 were foreign-educated. The majority of the foreign-educated faculty were from Asia and Europe. Results showed that both US- and foreign-educated faculty agreed on eight qualities as the …

Factors Impacting Success In Ninth Grade Algebra I For High School Students, James M. Lamie
Factors Impacting Success In Ninth Grade Algebra I For High School Students, James M. Lamie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS, 2013), No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and the Race to the Top initiative of 2009 has placed a greater emphasis on high stakes testing. A renewed emphasis on math education for all students and their ability to succeed in high school mathematics place new challenges on today’s classroom teachers. Although the belief is that with new standards and best teaching strategies students will improve their test scores, there are multiple factors that can serve as deterrents to the success in mathematics for at-risk high school students (Balfanz, 2009). The …

Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard
Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard
English Faculty Articles and Research
This article analyzes a particular set of disciplinings by students and colleagues that coalesced around my teaching of a university course in ‘Queer Theory.’ I use these regulatory discourses and practices as a springboard to investigate how academic and other disciplines (English, in particular) enable and reproduce certain stylizations, epistemologies, and methodologies, and what they implicitly and violently conceal and demonize; how style functions as politics and what the politics of style are; how queerness—queer inquiry and intervention, queer methodologies and epistemologies, queer activisms and insubordinations—might activate, exacerbate, and expose some of these questions and mechanisms. The form of the …
Consistency In Discipline, Pat Steffens, Kathy Bosch
Consistency In Discipline, Pat Steffens, Kathy Bosch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Consistency in dealing with children’s behavior is recommended if you want to be an effective parent. Although no parent can expect to be perfectly consistent, some level of consistency is needed for children to learn the lessons of social life and feel self-assured. Children learn appropriate behavior easier when learning conditions remain constant. Parents should consider at least four aspects of consistent discipline.

In the paper I examine the areas of team teaching, feedback, student needs, discipline, and classroom management for insights and solutions that served me during the interim year and will be useful to me when I encounter similar situations in the future.

G93-1190 Positive Approach To Discipline, Patricia E. Steffens
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Disipline is not the same as punishment. Disipline is not what you do to the child, but what you do with and for the child.
There is no magic formula that will answer all disciplinary questions. Nor is there one perfect way to discipline. No method is going to work with every child or in every situation. What we can do is to commit ourselves to a positive approach in our discipline...one that includes respect, clearly defined expectations, setting limits, and using reasonable consequences.
A positive approach to discipline helps adults and children work together rather than against each other. …

G90-985 Discipline -- An Effective Life Guide, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
There is no doubt that discipline is needed in families. Society could not exist if people acted without concern for others. Why, then, is there so much disagreement about this subject?
Parents often misunderstand and confuse the terms discipline and punishment. They see them as being the same thing but they are not. The dictionary defines discipline as "a system of rules governing conduct." It is "training that corrects, molds, or perfects." In contrast, punishment is defined as "retributive suffering, pain, loss, or penalty." The term discipline has its origin in the word "disciple" -- a follower who learns from …

G90-991 Parenting Your Child Effectively (Revised November 2003), Kathy Bosch, Herbert G. Lingren
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide contains guidelines to help parents interact with their children.
Parenting is both an action and an attitude! Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs you will have. One of the most difficult aspects of parenthood is the multitude of split-second decisions needed to guide and discipline children.
Although parenting is never easy, it becomes considerably more manageable when parents look at their attitudes about raising children. If they wish to change their parenting styles or improve discipline techniques, they need to begin by looking at how they "correct" their children's misbehavior and how they feel afterward.
