Pink And Blue Lenses: Duoethnographic Reflections On Biological Sex In Conservative Christian Education, Phillip A. Olt, Linly Stowe
The Qualitative Report
In this duoethnography, we explored how experiences in conservative Christian high schools were viewed through the different lenses of our binary-constructed, biological sexes. Our perceptions varied along the axes of gendered roles, gendered responsibilities, and romance and sexuality. Through reflecting on our own experiences, we critiqued what we were taught and the lasting repercussions those teachings left on our lives. The approach of indoctrination proved counterproductive in our schools, as graduates left unprepared to enter meaningful romantic relationships or to encounter a world outside their previously sheltered environs.

This predictive correlational study explored the lack of generalizable data regarding the use of technology in the Christian K-12 environment. The study searched for a predictive correlation between teachers’ overall use of technology, openness to change, amount of technology training, and hours of work beyond the contractual work week, based on previous study in public education (Vannatta & Fordham, 2004). The target population was all teachers who work in schools that are members in good standing with the Association of Christian Schools International in the United States. This thesis explores the educational philosophy and the creative process behind the creation of a new textbook and curriculum. The goal of this new textbook and curriculum is to help persuade high school students to view literature as an avenue of life-long learning. The plan to develop this textbook and curriculum is built on five objectives: a recognition of the need for holistic education, the implementation of differentiated teaching methods, the cultivation of student interest, the reflection of diversity within classrooms, and the integration of modern technology. This qualitative thesis project was conducted under the direction of Cedarville University and with the cooperation of the Christian Academy of Madison, in Madison, Indiana. The purpose of the project was to identify and analyze changes that occurred in a private school due to a significant increase in enrollment from students that received vouchers from the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program. Data was collected from third grade IREAD-3 and ISTEP+ state test scores from the previous four years. This project combined an extensive literature review, the creation of a practitioners manual and teaching materials, as well as the presentation of the ideas at a regional conference for Christian early childhood educators. For the literature review, I chose writers who dealt with multicultural education in general (such as Nieto, Bennett, and Banks), with Christian multiculturalism (such as Wilkerson, and Breckenridge), and also with those that wrote about how to affirm diversity and promote tolerance in early childhood education (Derman-Sparks, Spodek, Brown, Vold).
