Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Books
Instructional designers, instructional systems designers, and other educational technologists are, by their nature, innovators. These professionals apply and extend the applied science of learning, systems, communication, and instructional design theory to help students learn. Technology in some capacity is used to make the connections between subject matter experts, teachers, instructors, and their learners. It is common for instructional designers to seek new tools, techniques, and innovations for the improvement of learning, access, quality, and student satisfaction. However, the adoption and diffusion of new educational technology and innovation is a complex process that depends on many variables. Understanding these processes and …

Education and Policy Briefs
This research brief presents a case study of an English Learner Improvement Network (ELIN), a group of educators focused on a shared problem of practice in English Learner education and supported through extensive collaboration between researchers and practitioners in English Learner education and Improvement Science. The case study involves an urban school district and a charter organization each serving between 50-80% of students who have ever been English Learners. The research brief identifies five key themes that contribute to knowledge of the English Learner Improvement Networks’ ability to support English Learner improvement: (1) Expert Partnerships Support Improvement; (2) Context Impacts …

Towards A National Definition Of Teacher Residencies, Pathways Alliance, Prepared To Teach, National Center For Teacher Residenices
Prepared to Teach
The Pathways Alliance has developed this definition of teacher residencies to help clarify the field's use of the term. Our intention with this document is to support local partnership discussions about residency design and improvements and to provide state, regional, and federal leaders with a condensed yet thorough definition to guide policies that can support high-quality residencies to attract, prepare, and retain a robust and diverse teaching workforce.
The initial draft was co-constructed by the Teacher Residency Working Group, a collaborative group of Pathways Alliance members with expertise in residency development, support, and research. To inform and revise this definition, …

Sexuality Based Content In An Entry- Level Occupational Therapy Curriculum: A Content Analysis, Victoria E. Ontiberos, Steven M. Gerardi, Elizabeth Deluca
Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Sexuality is multifaceted and is developed across the lifespan. Researchers report little advancement, consistency, and knowledge regarding incorporation of sexuality into occupational therapy (OT) curricula, which supports the need for research. The purpose of this capstone project was two-fold: a) to conduct a content analysis of an entry-level OT curriculum to identify content gaps regarding addressing sexuality in practice; and b) to develop sexuality-based educational materials as a resource for the faculty for potential inclusion in future courses. The Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) is an evidenced-based model that was used in this project, in conjunction with notional sexuality educational …

Participatory Action Research Inside An English Second Language Classroom: Towards A Critical Syllabus, Amal Alnefaie
College of Education & Professional Studies (Darden) Posters
It is common to be bilingual all around the world, because of the spread of bilingualism around the world. There are many researchers who are interested in conducting studies on foreign language classrooms and second language classrooms. They are trying to find answers or solutions to second language students' struggles.
For example, Chomsky studies and his exploration in bilingual science. Wei (2000) said, bilingualism is rising around the world and there are one in three people who are bilingual or multilingual. In this paper, I will teach second language students how to conduct a participatory action research using the interview …

Effective Emodule Design For First-Year Medical Student Anatomy Curricula, Taylor J. Kratochvil Ms, Kaeli K. Samson Ma, Mph, Kari L. Nelson Phd, Travis L. Mccumber Phd
EMET Projects
Introduction: It is critical to evaluate student experience with any newly integrated educational resource. In 2018, a Distal Upper Limb (DUL) Anatomy eModule was developed for first-year medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, who have historically identified the DUL as a region of difficulty. This mixed methods study sought to (1) evaluate learner perception of the eModule relative to other resources, and (2) identify eModule content and features that students found valuable.
Methods: The DUL eModule was made available to first-year medical students in 2019 (n= 132), 2020 (n=131), and 2021 (n=131) as a voluntary, …

Parental Efficacy And Barriers To Learning In Early Intervention, Melissa Jensen
Parental Efficacy And Barriers To Learning In Early Intervention, Melissa Jensen
2022 Projects
While parent education can improve child outcomes, there still remain great variations in speech and language outcomes for children with hearing loss, including those enrolled in EI. In order for these programs to be as successful as possible, the parents should take the information they have learned and apply it to their interactions with their child. This is what leads to improved outcomes in children with hearing loss. Yet not all families enrolled in these services are able to make these modifications to their behaviors. Why are some parents able to successfully change based on their learning in early intervention …

Walking The Walk: Culturally Responsive Practices In Augmentative Alternative Communication, Aaron M. Doubet
2022 Projects
For many Americans, the ability to communicate effortlessly is an impossibility. For these individuals, the provision of Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) is of utmost importance. This current pilot study addressed the cultural representations present within stock AAC systems. The pilot study focused on two research questions: If I quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the iconography of AAC systems, in what ways, if any, will the information inform the researcher of potential cultural mismatches evident within the factory stock iconographic programming? If I analyze AAC devices using a deductive qualitative coding scheme, in what ways, if any, will this inform the researcher …

Processing Equity Consciousness Through Cre Action Research Pd During Times Of Unrest, Uncertainty, And The Amplification Of Crt Disinformation, Robyn Lyn
Graduate Research Posters
Equity initiatives, such as culturally responsive education (CRE), are under attack through local school board demonstrations and state legislatures across the U.S. These public attacks are becoming a barrier to equitable education. This study began before the public outcry against critical race theory and documents a timeline of events during a CRE 2-year action research professional development (PD). Though studies have examined the benefits of CRE, few investigate equity consciousness (EC), an awareness of systemic (in)equity. My study examines EC during a longitudinal CRE action research PD observing how equity consciousness presents in dialogue with veteran in-service teachers as they …
