The purpose of this study was to create tapes and accompanying materials for auto-instruction in developing visual discrimination skills at the pre-reading level. The tapes and materials were specifically designed to meet the needs of first grade children from a low socio-economic environment in Calgary, Alberta.

It was the purpose of this project (1) to develop a course of study incorporating the use of programmed instruction and small group discussion in a classroom situation, (2) to compare the progress of the class using the programmed instruction with a control class using the same unit plan but without programming, and (3) to draw conclusions as to the feasibility of using programmed instruction in teaching personal and family relationships at the ninth grade level.

The study was initiated to determine whether or not certain skills which are necessary to the development of good speech could be programed. Students utilizing programed instruction techniques would be able to practice skills which were formerly acquired during regular therapy sessions and, therefore, have the benefit of therapeutic services at their own discretion. The particular phase of speech therapy selected was auditory discrimination ability.

There is an indicated need for a method that deals with the learning problem of each individual non-reading student. The TMI-Grollier Self-Tutoring Program, "First Steps In Reading for Meaning" offers the possibility of a solution to the problem of how to individualize instruction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this program to fulfill the indicated need.
