A handbook was developed to assist teachers and librarians in the presentation of the Caldecott books to elementary children. This handbook provides suggested enrichment materials and activities which can be used with children. Through these related activities children should become more aware of the importance of the Caldecott books as special picture books in the field of literature.

This project report presents the development of an alternative education program for Tumwater School District, Tumwater, Washington. The program was examined in four parts: the existent conditions as the program began, the initial organization of the program, development and implementation, and the reorganization and closure of the program. The recommendations included additional research on the effect of alternative education program's on student achievement.

A preschool model for 3-5 year old rural handicapped children is based on developmental skills in the areas of receptive and expressive language acquisition, fine and gross motor movement and beginning cognitive skills. Also included, to facilitate the establishment of a new rural preschool is a list of materials needed to begin the program and a list of free and low cost legal, medical, and assessment services. The need for rural preschool programs is discussed as well as reasons for growth of preschool in Washington state.

The purpose of this present study is to obtain data related to textbooks used by personnel within the Renton School District, i.e. teachers at all levels, librarians, Directors of Social Studies and Language Arts curriculums, Library Specialists, etc., perceptions of the multi-ethnic effectiveness of the Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum and to assess the discrepancies in perceptions of these curriculums.

A vocabulary enrichment program of one hundred and twenty words for use at the third grade level was developed. The program included thirty weekly sets of formal written lessons to provide the opportunity for students to practice the meaning or multiple meanings of each word. A picture was used to represent the meaning or multiple meanings of each word.

The need for developing strategies for teaching in the content areas was examined and, as a result, a study guide was developed to aid students in understanding the content of the psychology textbook. Lessons were developed for each of four different chapters to serve as instructional tools for teaching the content of a specific psychology textbook. The study guide contains twenty-four lessons and answer keys.
