The oversimplification with which the new Common Core State Standards approach the instruction of students with disabilities leaves much to be desired on the part of the classroom teacher, who is left to determine how the standards will be made accessible for all students. The new standards require increased skill and application across the subject areas. Those students with specific learning needs may require additional support, altered classroom instruction and an increase in staff-to-specialist collaboration. Freirian Reflections On Social Justice Education: A Practitioner’S Perspective, D. Scott Tharp

This paper integrates Freirian ideas into reflections from one social justice educators’ practice within higher education. While the author originally learned about Freire in a limited fashion related to systems of oppression, dialogical approaches to education and the importance of praxis, Freire become reduced to a method for practice. Through an expanded reading of Freire’s broader works beyond Pedagogy of the Oppressed, “new” concepts related to class suicide, authority and freedom, political clarity, and epistemological circling complicate and illuminate a more robust reflection upon his own social justice education practice. This paper explored the impact of a doctoral induction seminar taken over several years on the emergence of each author’s identity as a teacher educator and researcher. We concluded that the seminar was pivotal in our development, both collectively and as individuals.

This interactive session reviews the work of our "Top Ten" seminal educational theorists and contextualizes their most significant contributions in terms of their potential to enhance the teaching effectiveness of session participants. A variety of well-known and not-so-well-known theorists were deliberately chosen in a effort to make the session attractive to both experts and relative neophytes of the learning/education literature. The selected scholars vary from those well known in the management education literature (e.g. John Dewey, Jean Piaget) to those who are perhaps less well-known or appreciated (e.g. Lev Vygotsky, Robert Gagne, Paulo Freire, Malcolm Knowles, and Jack Mezirow).
