This proposal focuses on the importance of universal design when teaching either one-shot library instruction or semester long information literacy courses. This presentation will discuss how all students can benefit from a course that is barrier-free to students who have already self-disclosed as students with disabilites.

This presentation also will discuss the intense reluctance of students with disabilities to self-disclose at the college level. And how some students may not even be aware of the fact that they have a learning disability—making it even more importance to implement (and hence include) universal design principles into your teaching methodologies.

The achievement gap for the educational attainment of underrepresented populations has been the subject of study for decades. According to the Kentucky School Report Card data for school year 2018-2019, the Latinx community has an achievement gap rate of 42.0% with differences of -19.1% compared to White (non-Hispanic) students. Therefore, it is essential to find pathways to close the educational attainment gap and achieve equity. Implementing a negotiated curriculum entails sharing power with students by giving them the autonomy to make decisions of varying degrees about curriculum and pedagogical practices. It is a relational pedagogy that increases student agency and engagement, enhances inclusion and belonging, and models democratic dialogue.
