In January 2020, the Outreach and Engagement Team at the College of the Holy Cross began preparing a poetry walk, which was reconfigured to a social media “poetry event” due to COVID-19. With the anticipated return of students to campus for the Spring 2021 semester and a need for the community (especially students) to have recreational opportunities that were safe, socially distanced and preferably outside, the Team attempted for a second time to plan a poetry walk. The Purple is a student magazine published by the College of the Holy Cross. In 1919, the editors endeavored to commemmorate the publication's Silver Jubillee by establishing a book series of college verse drawn from The Purple.

"The Purple Poets: Volume One" is the first in the series and features the poetry of Edward V. Killeen, Class of 1919. Killeen had been a major contributor to The Purple and was to serve as editor-in-chief of the magazine his senior year. He died before returning to Holy Cross in the fall of 1918. …
