Problem

One of the most significant issues for higher education in the early 21st century is student success. Research studies indicate that a large number of freshman community college students are unsuccessful in their academic endeavor. However, there is insufficient research conducted to determine the holistic causes of this problem. Current research focuses on two types of traditional predictors: cognitive (ability, academic factors) and non-cognitive (affective, non-academic factors). The idea of the university in Latin America has been strongly influenced by Europeanmodels that were perpetuated since the arrival of the colonizers. As a result, theuniversity activity was conceived in special places where students learned aboutcertain topics and then return to the real world. In recent years, there has been agrowing concern in various groups of scholars and public leaders for the relevanceof the impact that universities are having on their communities. Problem. Throughout the Caribbean Union College (CUC) constituency thousands of youth are unemployed and unemployable. They do not possess marketable skills. At present no church-operated educational institutions exist in the constituency to provide relevant education for 50%-60% of its young people.

Methods. The survey method of research was used to compare the self-perceived educational needs of non-college-bound youth with the perceptions of board members/administrators, faculty/staff, alumni, students, parents/guardians, and other-adult SDAs of those needs in the CUC constituency. Problem. Much descriptive research has been undertaken on the academic dean's role which has been determined by the perceptions of significant others.

Since the dean has had several categories of prescribed roles, scholars have tended to emphasize these roles and approach administrator-preparation from a prescriptive basis. This approach, though useful, ignores a crucial dimension--the variables, forces, or stimuli that impinge upon and influence the dean in his/her decision-making areas.
