Challenging Filipino Colonial Mentality With Philippine Art, Francesca V. Mateo

For 350 years, the Philippines was colonized by Spain and the United States. The Philippines became a sovereign nation in 1946 yet, fifty years later, colonial teachings continue to oppress Filipinos due to their colonial mentality (CM.) CM is an internalized oppression among Filipinos in which they experience an automatic preference for anything Western—European or U.S. American—and rejection of anything Filipino. Although Filipinos show signs of a CM, there are Filipinos who are challenging CM by engaging in Philippine art. The Rosemary Adams Department of Visual Arts at Ouachita Baptist University will host Stephen Watson in a guest exhibit, “Emanate: A Fragrant Installation,” Sept. 12- Oct. 17. The artist invites the public to installation viewings of Sept. 10-11. An opening reception and artist lecture will be held Monday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in Moses-Provine Hall’s Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery, where the exhibit will be displayed. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Museums today have many responsibilities, including protecting and understanding objects in their care. Many also have relationships with groups of people whose items or artworks are housed within their institutions. This paper explores the relationship between museums and Northwest Coast Native Americans and their artists. Participating museums include those in and out of the Northwest Coast region, such as the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Burke Museum, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Museum. Ouachita Baptist University’s Art Club will host its annual Juried Student Art Exhibit from Feb. 1-March 2 in Ouachita’s Hammons Art Gallery, located in Mabee Fine Arts Center. This year’s juror was John Deering, award-winning cartoonist and illustrator for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Winners will be announced at a reception on Feb. 12, 6-7 to p.m., in Hammons Gallery. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

A variety of student work will be featured in the exhibit, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and other media.
