Ouachita Baptist University’s Huckabee School of Education will host its annual Called to Teach Conference on Friday, July 21, in Walker Conference Center, 485 Campus Drive. Called to Teach is open to the public; attendees can receive six hours of professional development credit through the Arkansas Department of Education.

Ouachita Baptist University’s community & family services program in the Pruet School of Christian Studies and the Title IX department will host a conference titled “Keeping Faith” to help faith-based communities learn how to recognize and respond to all forms of child abuse. Dr. Jason Doroga, assistant professor of Spanish at Ouachita Baptist University, presented his paper “Negative Analogy: A New Direction for Analogical Change” as part of the Linguistics Friday Seminar Series at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in April. The paper analyzes the cycles of analogy and changing patterns of language use in the speech community, exploring the role of analogy in explaining changes in the form of Spanish-language past participles.

In partnership with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, Ouachita Baptist University’s Pruet School of Christian Studies will host its annual Pastors’ Conference on Thursday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in Walker Conference Center on the Ouachita campus.

Titled “Psalms: The Character of God,” the conference will feature two speakers from the Pruet School. Dr. Danny Hays, dean emeritus of the Pruet School and professor emeritus of Biblical studies, and Dr. Doug Nykolaishen, professor of Biblical studies, are both noted Old Testament scholars. Attendees can purchase Dr. Hays’ and Dr. Nykolaishen’s, published books at a discount.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Patterson School of Natural Sciences hosted the inaugural Arkansas Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Conference on Saturday, March 20, for college students across the state. The virtual event was conducted entirely over Zoom and featured a keynote address by chemist Dr. E. Ann Nalley, seven concurrent panel discussions with 31 professional women in STEM fields and two sessions of poster presentations highlighting woman-led research and honoring notable women’s contributions to STEM.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Dr. Jerusa Carvajal-Villamar, assistant professor of Spanish, recently presented a paper at the biennial meeting of the Society for Amazonian & Andean Studies (SAAS). The conference was held Oct. 5-6 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and was hosted by the University of Alabama.

The SAAS national conference is dedicated to studying, featuring and promoting research about the Amazonian and Andean regions of South America. Attendees represent a wide diversity of disciplines and fields, such as literature, ethnography, cultural studies, dietetics, contemporary themes, archaeology and more.

Dr. Barbara Pemberton, director of Ouachita Baptist University’s Carl Goodson Honors Program and professor of Christian missions, presented at the National Collegiate Honors Council’s 51st annual conference. The conference was held Oct. 12-16 in Seattle, Wash.

The conference attracts nearly 2,000 honors students and administrators from all 50 states and several other nations. The national submission process for presenters is highly selective, with hundreds of students and faculty submitting proposals each year.
